Starting to get bored with my workout

So I went from absolutely zero exercise at all to doing a 45-60 minute walk every day (except a rest day on sat) for the last month or so. For a while I really looked forward to it but today I kind of had to nudge myself out the door, and I barely stayed the full hour -- I think i'm just getting bored.
I've been planning to get a Kinect + Dance Central (or it seems a lot of people like zumba?) for when this happened or when I felt like it was too hot/too cold to walk outside anymore. But now I'm kind of looking at something like turbofire. Any thoughts? I'm afraid turbofire will be just TOO much - I am not and have never been in any way athletic. In my best shape ever in high school and not overweight, I chugged my way to a 10 minute 45 second mile, once. (probably would have been faster to WALK but they said it didn't count unless I jogged the whole thing). The last 5 years I have spent almost entirely on my butt either at work or at the computer at home.
Thoughts? Recommendations? Should I start with the kinect (and pray it goes on sale somewhere in the near future) and work up to the beach body video sets?

Start running. It'll make your walk so much more interesting. Just try running one minute at a time with a few minutes recovery walk time in between. Soon you'll be running longer and faster and burning more. Also, free weights work wonders. Try squats, lunges, mountain climbers (google it!), bicep curls, tricep dips (on a chair or bench), concentration curls. Or just try a Jillian Michaels video (most of them are $10 each) which has a lot of strength workout in it and you can try the running as well. Or ride your bike or rollerblade (great for the thighs and glutes!).0

Kinect won't be going on sale anytime soon. Give turbofire a try, and do your best. You may not be able to keep up but anything is great.
Also you can check out workout videos for free at bodyrock.tv . They are shorter than turbofire, but you can add them together to make it longer, or just do them more than once. They are quite intense and setup in the same fashion, short intervals or your highest intensity for exercises. That might be a simple thing like high knees, but you doing high knees at your highest intensity is much different than just finishing through for the minute just to get done.0 -
If you are thinking of Turbo Fire you may want to start with her first set Turbo Jam. Turbo Jam is kinda like her kickboxing beginner version of Turbo Fire. I got great results with her first set Turbo Jam and you get (5) workouts for a great price! :bigsmile:0

can you get or do you get/have netflix? if so try some of those. the crunch videos are fun and 10 min fat blasting is good too. good luck!0

change your walk, basically where you are walking. or like some said above, run! or go for a hike! it's really easy to get bored. I usually do something every day of the week, then start over when a new week starts. you could also try carrying hand weights or wrist weights every other day! adds strength training and makes the walk feel more challenging.0

I make no appologies, I'm biased - for me it's Kinect, no doubt. I've also had the Wii but Kinect wins hands down. It's the "only" thing that has held my interest in being active since leaving the Air Force 11 years ago. In fact Kinect was the inspiration to lose the weight and get onto MFP, not the other way around.
It's fun; can be your own personal trainer - it knows what you are doing and how well you are doing it; can give you a light workout or intense workout - you choose; is versatile & varied; convenient & private; did I mention "fun"...
Just warm up; wear the right gear ie. still wear runners even in your own home; get a workout mat; & adjust the room to suit. Why some of those last tips you ask - because in the beginning I sustained a few funny but still painful injuries and so did my loungeroom light & fittings...
Yeh it costs to setup & get going but that's it - no ongoing costs except for the odd game if you want to. I found the investment well worth it but understand that it's not cheap to get going.
My Kinect programes in order of most to least used: Sports, Biggest Loser Ultimate Workout, Adventures, Fighters Uncaged.
My Kinect programes in order of most to least favorite: Sports, Fighters Uncaged, BLUW, Adventures.
My Kinect activities in order of intensity* (ie. you want to clock up a quick cal burn, say 10+ cal/min): Fighters Uncaged; Sports: Target Practice; Adventures: Reflex Ridge; Sports: Boxing, Soccer, Volley Ball...
A few extreme activities: the first 3 from above.
*Though often it partly comes down to how much you put in is how much you get out, but I can easily pull 400+ cal and more in 35/40mins on these.
PS - ie. you are not limited to "just" using Fitness focused programes - the vast majority of the gaems/programmes will do although obviously a HRM comes in very handy if it's not a fitness focused program to track your burn.
In closing for me it's Kinect but whatever gets you off your butt - go do it - the benefits are something to treasure: more energy, less stress, better sleep, more to eat and on, and on...
PSS - also for anyone that does get one - accuracy of the sensor is all about placement of the sensor - if you are getting dodgy results then make sure your sensor is centered to the TV & the higher the better - 5 to 6ft on the wall I reckon is best.

My situation is very similar. Yesterday I purchased a stability ball. They are only about $25 & usually come with a dvd. They have different sizes, depending on one's height. There is no way I can do the dvd workout, but I can do the warmup & it is good workout for someone who has been fairly sedentary. I felt it in muscles that I must not use when I walk. I can pick up the ball periodically throughout the day & do a few of the exercises. I plan to workup to more. I did some research & found that any exercise you do with the stability ball will double the calories burned. I am going to look for a beginner workout.0

Thanks guys - I do break into a short jog on some days (when I feel really good about it) but I find it SO tiring - yesterday I got myself myself to run for one minute flat and today my right knee was not super thrilled about it (walked it off and it was fine though). And I was totally tired after that one minute. Mostly I think I am going to have a hard time getting excited to get up and run if i'm having a hard time getting excited to get up and walk.
Netflixing some videos is a good idea, I didn't think of that. As far as the turbofire vs turbojam thing.... I know it just means I'm way too susceptible to marketing but the turbojam site makes it look soooo cheesy.
I have to wear shoes for kinect, really? which games or just all of them? I hate shoes - I only wear my vibram ff's to walk to protect my feet from sharp/rough surfaces. And as soon as I get to work my shoes are under my desk.0 -
"I have to wear shoes for kinect, really?"
Each to his/her own and could be I'm just a clutz LOL But I have come very very close to twisting an ankle as with some of the games like Sports & Adventures you are jumping around a lot. And I almost tore my blaster toenail out - don't even ask how that one came about. Can't really remember now but do remember "OUCH!" and deciding to wear my cross trainers from that point on LOL0 -
I've always been told to change up your workout every so often, that way you do not get bored with it. Keep your walks, but add some jazz to it, lol when I mean jazz, I don't mean jazz music, like one day walk, the next day walk and then add a couple of jumping jacks or push ups or sit ups or whatever you are comfortable with doing or what you are able to do. Don't strain yourself either.
Or one day, another day do an exercise video, another day walk again, etc....just keep changing it, so its not boring!
Hope that helps you out and good luck with your journey! :flowerforyou:0
