Cooked Weight v Raw

Now this may be a stupid question but when considering the calorie values of pasta, are these based on weight before cooking or after? For instance 75g of Amori pasta turns into about 150g when cooked. Now I'm assuming that as nothing is added to the pasta apart from water that this shouldn't change the calorific value, however, is the initial calculation based on raw or cooked? Sorry - does this make any sense at all?

Hi! Unless it states "cooked pasta" it's usually raw weight. It's confusing isn't it? I think pasta roughly doubles in weight when cooked and rice roughly multiples by two thirds, e.g. 50g raw = 150g cooked.

Always BEFORE unless the pkg specifies otherwise.

Whne I type in pasta I normally type in 'Tecos Spaghetti raw' so I am 100% I am getting the values correct as opposed to calculatig myself.

I am sure you can do it the other way round too "Tesco Spagetti cooked' ??

I don't know of a fool proof calculation to convert raw pasta values to cooked pasta values so I weigh mine before !!

Pasta and rice are the most difficult items to enter on MFP, in my experience. Eventually I just entered my own values so I know what I'm entering is correct.

Generally you'd weight it before cooking. I'd only burn myeslf of get in a mess trying to weigh it after. Check your packaging, the values will be in dry weight I'm sure or how would you know how much to cook?

The calorie content is BEFORE cooking.
    for example:
    Ronzoni Rotini 2oz (about 3/4 cup) = 210 calories.
To determine how much that was cooked, I boiled the entire box (16oz) and divided the cooked pasta into 8 equal portions (servings per box) and each portion weighed approximately 4.3 ounces.

so... 1 portion = 2oz raw = 4.3 oz cooked = 210 calories. The after weight is variable, so I think the doubling rule is a good one to follow. 2oz uncooked = 4 oz cooked.

    good luck ;)
