Fun ways to burn calories...

I have discovered over the last year that exercise can be really fun. Last year at this time I joined a swimming class at my local outdoor pool. The class met for an hour, twice a week. I knew how to swim before I joined the class but didn't know any of the strokes.
Now, about a year later I have made it to the advanced class. We meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings for an hour. The instructor has us working on the different strokes, swimming intervals, practicing drills, etc. I believe I burn about 600 calories during the hour and can honestly say that it is a lot of fun. It doesn't seem like exercise, it seems like I'm on a team. Swimming laps always seemed so boring to me until I gave this class a try.
I'm surprised how much I like swimming. It's freeing. I feel like I'm weightless. I have to concentrate on breathing the entire time that I can't think about anything else that might have been bothering me during the day.
I recently signed up for circuit training (similar to fitlite) and can't believe how painfully boring I find it. The 30 minute workout seems so much harder to get through than the hour of swimming. I think for me, team sports/exercise is the way to go.
Do you have any fun ways to burn calories?

  • I used to swim a lot but i gave it up, lately I decided to go back and I'm having so much fun. I swim about a mile each time I go into the pool and it doesn't seem like I'm exercising at all (I mean, I feel it afterwards, but during it's just fun!). Also I've taken up Zumba, I'm taking a class, one hour, three times a week, and it's sooooo much fun. I just dance for an hour and still exercise more than I think I ever had. It's great that you found something that's fun but also works! Keep going!

The gym I go to has stationary bikes with screens on them that allow you to choose different virtual tracks or courses, and you ride around a college campus, or an urban landscape, or through the country, or various other courses..and virtual riders are also out there on the track, so you have to pass them when you come up on them. I'm not normally a terribly competitive person, but as I'm riding, if I see someone in front me...I've just gotta hustle up and get in front of them. "Hmmm, once I get in front of THAT guy I'll have the open track ahead of me. Wait! There's ANOTHER guy...I better pass him...oh geez, there's somebody else..."

    It's fun, but exhausting.
