Exercise for a Non-Exerciser

I know I need to exercise but I just don't like to and have limited time to do so. What type of exercises do you do to help lose weight without having to spend an hour at the gym or becoming bored and unmotivated????

    I keep it different. If I do just one thing all the time as with food and other things in life I get bored. On my cable provider we have bideos available with different times on them. On days I don't go to the gym I do these. Another great thing is just to get outside and walk.

    If you like dancing, Zumba is really great. Pretty much any dancing video will feel like fun and not exercise. Then you can graduate to programs like turbo jam and 30 Day shred. I've lost 33lbs so far without stepping foot into a gym. :) Good luck to you!

    walk, zumba, buy a exercise dvd and do it at home.. anything.. just get in something.. i hated it at first, now I LOOOOOOOVE it

    I've never worked out for more than 30 min a day 4-6 times a week. When I started it was about 3 times a week, now it's more like 6 times.

    I walked for 30 min outside when I could. Then I got an elliptical machine free off Craig's List and used that. I could only use it for 5 or 8 min at a time when I started I was so out of shape and HATED working out. I watched TV while doing it and that helps me not be bored.

    Now I either walk/jog outside or on my treadmill (bought a couple months ago) or use my new elliptical on the days I don't walk/jog for crosstraining. Now I LIKE exercising. It took me about 2-3 months to even not hate it and another 3 or so to start to like it. It's part of my routine now and even with a husband a 4 year old son and full time nursing school I have 30 min no matter what, you just have to MAKE time for it.

    There are many different DVD programs out there that you don't have to step foot in a gym. Beachbody is a great company with many different programs all with more then one video to keep you interested. Find one that works best for you. they have one called 10 minute trainer that each workout is 10 minutes and can just put them together or do them through out your day. Also jogging or going for brisk walk are great alternatives to the gym as well. Good luck.

    I h.a.t.e. working out, at least in the beginning. now I feel sort of guilty if I don't do at least a little each day. I am not a big runner/jogger for my cardio - but when I do, I jog in place while watching Tom and Jerry Cartoons. :)

    I know that sounds weird, but one 20 minute episode of the cartoon and me jogging while watching it - classic. :p It allows me to get that exercise in without really thinking that I am exercising!

    You can also try to find activities you enjoy and take classes, such as dancing or martial arts.
  • I just started week 2 of the "couch to 5k" program. I really like it so far and I have always HATED running with a passion. It is a nice build up to being able to run 3 miles in the end.

    I keep an excercise ball in my office and when I have some down time I do anywhere from 50-100 crunches a day along with some light weightlifting. Gets the blood pumping enough to where you don't feel completely sedentary. :smile:

    Zumba! You don't even have to join a gym. Just put on some good music and move!

    Hey, I've been wondering where all the NON-exercisers have been hiding! Some of my friends really put me to shame!

    I volunteered to walk dogs at the SPCA to get some exercise. Yeah, I had to fill out a form and commit for 3 months in order to get me moving! Oh, that and Zumba, which is the only exercise I don't hate.

    Walking is the easiest and it's pretty effective. Start with 30 minutes each day. You might add in a little jogging to your walk, 30 seconds at a time. Rest for a minute or two and then jog for 30 seconds again. If you like it, up the jogging portion to a minute and so on. If you decide to do the jogging, only do it every other day to avoid joint injuries. I have always hated running with a passion but I started walking/jogging in April. I ran 3.5 miles (over 5K) twice this past weekend while in the mountains at 7200 feet. And it felt good!

    Otherwise, Netflix has some exercise videos available through their instant queue. Comcast (my cable provider) also has an exercise section with a lot of different workout shows or videos.

    If your kids have a game system (PS3, XBox or Wii), check out the dance, Zumba or Wii Fit games.

    I take a brisk 30 minute walk every day and this is very effective...tones the legs, gets the circulation moving, clears the mind and releases happy endorphins...and its free! You can split this into two 15 minute walks if 30 minutes is too much for you and any extra walking is even better.

    Other exercise I do is challenging myself to do constructive things such as housework and gardening etc....the results at the end of it make the exercise much more worthwhile when you have a nice clean house and a tidy garden to show for your efforts. Cleaning windows and washing the car are all good too, make you sweat and help tone those batwings!

    Always take the stairs instead of the lift and if you drive park your car at the furthest point away from the shops, or if you use public transport get off one or two stops earlier...it all helps.
