Depends on goal
But why not both?1 -
What are your goals? What do you want from your body? What time and equipment do you have access to? What do you enjoy?
The best exercise regime is the one you enjoy and will therefore stick to!
I do both lifting and cardio because I want to drop my BF%, get stronger and look leaner. I also want to be cardiovascularly fit. I enjoy spinning and HIIT circuits and I love the feeling that heavy lifting gives so I am still loosely following SL5X5 programme and adding some accessory work and calisthenics.0 -
During a calorific deficit, strength work (such as dead lifts) will help you maintain (preserve) existing muscle.
Cardio, even the high intensity stuff like Insanity, will help you to lose weight by increasing your calorific deficit (and also improve your cardio vascular fitness).
Which exercises you do depends on your goal but if your goal is to lose fat and retain muscle. Strength training is important and calorific deficit is essential (which you can achieve by diet, cardio exercise, or both).
If you do choose to do strength training (and I highly recommend it) using weights you should pick a progressive (continually getting more challenging), full body routine - some examples here: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10332083/which-lifting-program-is-the-best-for-you
