BIGGEST MYTHS … BUSTED Mark Dugdale unveils some of his favorite bodybuilding myths:
Myth #1: Circuit training is for fitness models. I’ve found a properly designed circuit that hits all areas of the body with five exercises can be both effective as a form of HIIT cardio and an aid to muscle recovery between heavy, brutal workouts. The high volume and fast pace benefit cardiovascular capacity and body composition, while the increased blood flow fosters quicker recovery.
Myth #2: There’s only one effective training protocol. Certainly our genetic make-up plays a role in which method will result in the quickest growth, but no single program is perfect. We can gain from a wide variety of training methods and we shouldn’t be afraid to test different ideas.
Myth #3: Eating fat is unhealthy and will make you fat. The agri-business has brainwashed America into thinking a diet high in grains is the road to health, and I’m calling that idea BS. I’ve switched to a moderate-protein/high-fat diet for more than a year, and my blood-test scores have all improved, including cholesterol. My body composition is better and I’ve experienced no ill effects with training intensity and endurance. Obviously the type of fat we consume is important, so I stick to nuts, grass-fed beef, wild game, fish oil and olive oil.
