calculated the amount of calories i need for my weight and with my under active thyroid counted in, which says i need 1800 cals a day, and have 6 small meals of 300 cals. going to try that out for a few weeks and see if i get a bigger weight loss.

hi
what do you mean by "with my underactive thyroid counted in" how do you count it in?0 -
http://thyroid.about.com/cs/dietweightloss/a/eatingenough.htm
theres just one of the websites ive found that says i need to take in to account my underactive thyroid, it says that i need to subtract 200 cals from my daily calorie amount.
i have been having 1500 cals a day, plus exercise, aswell as eating them, and i still havent been losing for the past 3 weeks and i dont understand why, so im going to give this a try for a few weeks and see how it goes with my weight loss.

don't know why that posted twice lol but good luck too0

hmmm...that gives me 2038 calories a day...I was still gaining on 1700 so I don't think I'll be using this method0

are you on medication for your thyroid condition?0
-
Thanks for the link. I'm on medication so my levels are normal now. I don't subtract extra for the thyroid issue or eat mini-meals (my life doesn't make many meals a day feasible).
I did have to bump up my calorie intake (lowered my goal to 0.5 lb/week) and started losing again. MFP and what that calculator comes out to are pretty close.0 -
Are you on meds? I am and don't subtract anything for the thyroid since it is within normal levels due to the medication.0
-
Im on Synthroid daily. Ive never dropped calories just because of my thyroid issues and ive done great on my weight loss. Dont think ill be changing. Thanks for the info tho.0
-
yes im on meds. 70% of the time i still feel like i did before i got put on my tablets.
for the past month ive stopped losing weight, even though ive exercised and ate my cals, so im trying this out.0 -
If you don't feel better on the meds, have your levels checked again. Your dosage might need adjustment. It took 6 months for us to find my best dosage. And do checkups at least every 6 months, too.0
-
Have you T3 levels checked as well. I still felt sluggish and when those were checked, it was discovered that I need a T3 medication as well. Made a HUGE difference.0
-
i have my meds checked every 2 month, and theyve been getting checked for over a year now.0
-
If you are on just a T4 or synthroid they won't check your other thyroid levels though. T3 is very important and overlooked so much. Good luck with everything!0

Good info....regarding the T3, did you have to go to a specialist? My current DO just checked my thyroid and said it was normal range (I do take synthroid).
I noted to a different doc once, that I thought I had a problem, because I was gaining, even though I was diligant with a diet plan and exercise. Since the meds, loosing weight was easier for the first 40lbs...however, I've reached a plateau. I had them rechecked and again, normal. I was going everything from running up to probably 15 miles a week, in addition to other cardio and weight training. I even hired a trainer that I was working with, but was seeing little results.
My major thing is that I feel exhausted.. and my doc thought it was low iron, but that was normal. LOL...obvioulsy something is wrong! I've backed off on my training -- attempted a different approach, and a recent fit point test at my gym suggested I eat 1700 cals...which...I'm pretty sure I wasn't before.
I'll see how these new adjustments work, but if not I might explore the T3 check... has anyone else had problems with loosing weight with thyroid issues?0 -
I switched my primary care to a doctor that is known in my area for great thyroid treatments. He actually put in the test for me I didn't have a clue when I had my first appointment with him :-) I also have low B12 levels (that often goes hand in hand with thyroid) so I take a B12 supplement as well. I too had trouble losing and getting back to where I was until the T3, B12, and also discovering a food allergy all thanks to finding the right doctor. I also started running to train for a marathon and that helped a lot. The weight came off out of no where it seemed after that. Good luck with everything!!0

I never felt great on Synthroid even when my TSH was in the 'normal' range. I switched to Armour thyroid years ago and have felt great ever since. I did have trouble getting Armour last year, but found a compounding pharmacy that makes the equivalent, and my doctor has been great in working with me.0

Did you have a hard time getting your doctor to switch you to Armour thyroid? I would probably agree that I take Synthroid right now and still dont feel great.
I still get cold alot (I have a heater in my office lol), again the fatigue/exhausted feeling, and my skin is still really dry along with some hair loss...all of which I know are signs of the thyroid....oh and the fat that my weight has stopped... I feel like I might be gaining again actually
I'm not the "perfect" eater, but I'm pretty close to it...and I track my food/exercise on here, along with trying to take advice from the trainer about "eating' more...which is a scary concept for me!!! augh.... Just wished this stupid body would cooperate!! I have 30-35 more pounds LOL...then I'll be where I want to be!0
