Anyone learnt to swim as an adult? I'd like to learn as know it's a good all over exercise to do. If you have roughly how long did it take?
Thanks in advance.

I'm a swim teacher and teach children but a few adults do one to one lessons. As an adult you have more fear than children but the teacher should be able to gauge how far to push you enough so that you improve big by bit without pushing you too far that you get put off. Trust the teacher though, they should not make you do anything that you are not capable of doing. You have also to trust them in that if they say that you can do something then you probably can and its the nerves in your head holding you back - good luck1

You probably have two options - group lessons or one-to-one. Personally I'd go with the one-to-one, whilst more expensive you'll get a lot more out of it faster.
I could already swim, of sorts, before having adult lessons. As a scuba diver, I had no problems being in or under water, but this isn't the case for many people, and why you may need a teacher you can wholly trust so you learn water confidence.
A good teacher will also video you, to show you your stroke and give you pointers, but ultimately it is you who are going to have to go to the pool along to practice what you have learnt. Go to lane sessions at your local pool, but follow the etiquette - if you're slow, start in the slow lane, and let people pass if need be (they may tap your foot to tell you they want to pass), and if you need to stop at the end of a lap (I do) keep to the side so those on a circuit can see you and avoid you. If you want to be in the pool chasing to friends, do so, but not in the lane or climb out.1 -
I took adult swim lessons when I was in my mid-30's, 20 some years ago. If I remember correctly I met with the instructor twice a week for 4-6 weeks. By the end of the lessons I had learned to do a standard front stoke, side stroke, and backstroke. I never did get a good breast stroke though. I'm sure everyone's progression differs. Find an instructor and ask them what to expect.1
