Wii Fit Plus Running

Hey everyone,

So, I am up to running 2 miles outside pretty much every day at a pace of a 10 minute mile. Not too shabby really.

Last night, it was storming and I was in the mood for something different anyways, so I did 20 minutes of running on the Wii Fit Plus. I have a couple of observations and I guess I am just wondering what your thoughts are on this or if you have any feedback.

Basically it amounts to 20 minutes of jogging in place. The first thing I noticed is that jogging in place works a different group of muscles...or at least on me. I really felt it in my lower leg muscles more than I do for a regular run.

The other observation I made is that the distance calculated by the Wii was a 1/2 mile further than my normal 20 minute run pace. I suspect this was a miscalculation. The Wii also estimated my calories at almost 1/2 what I would normally burn in a 20 minute run.

Any thoughts??

First off the Wii remote just has an accelerometer in it so judging distance is a bit strange, so I wouldn't be concerned.

Also, when people run in place they tend to run on your tiptoes versus normal heel striking running. It is not surprising you feel different muscles. You just did a whole bunch of calf raises, essentially.

Third, I have always thought the calorie count on Wii Fit PLus to be a bit off. When I use my HRM and do it there is a distinct difference. That being said, keep in mind that the road and outdoors offers many more challenges to get your HR up than your inside workout area does.

    Hope that helps. :)

    Thanks,

I found myself on my toes more and I had to consciously do a "whole foot" step. I don't think I would consider this work out equal to an outdoor run....something different but still worth while I guess.

Hey, I'm new here and was looking for others who enjoy the Wii Fit. I do the running on my mini-trampoline while going down the "wii fit" path. It is a lot easier on your feet, knees and legs and helps me "run" longer. Hope that helps someone!
