I've been a vegetarian (consumed all veges & milk products but no eggs or meat) all my life and had no health problems or protein deficiency issues, instead GAINED a lot of weight. Require major help with metabolism boosting foods!

OP, do you measure your intake? The problem is most likely not related to what you are eating, but how much.

I've been a vegan for over a decade. I got fat as a vegan and now I'm fit as a vegan. My whole world changed when I started weighing my solid food in grams to see what I was actually consuming. It opened my eyes and proved to me that I was still drastically over eating for my caloric needs.

Weight loss, barring certain medical concerns, is more about the number of calories that you consume as opposed to what you are eating. Health and nutrition, on the other hand is influenced by our overall macro and micro nutrient intake, which is determined by the overall state of your total diet.

My suggestion to you would be to spend some time weighing your food on a scale, logging your intake on MFP using grams when possible, and following the calorie goal provided by MFP. You will, most likely, see some success in this fashion.

    ^What bane said.

Also, there really aren't any metabolism boosting foods; protein is harder to digest and will expend more calories (Thermal Effect of Food) but its still fairly minimal in the grand scheme of things.

Exercise can provide increases to metabolism (especially weight training) but not in the manor you are probably thinking. In the end, you need to find a balance between calories consumed and calories expended.

Cheese, donuts, chips, ice cream are all vegetarian... So is white bread, crackers, french fries.... see my point? It's easy to eat too many calories while staying vegetarian.

Being vegetarian has nothing to do with gaining/losing weight.

There's nothing wrong with any of those foods, though. They can all be part of a healthy diet. My diet includes most of those foods in moderation and some of them in very large quantities.

Thank you all for the insights.

I get the point. I did a lot of bulky intake of oily and cheesy junk foods which caused the weight gain, apart from my sedentary lifestyle. I've added exercise of 1 to 1.5 hours to my daily routine with MFP measured food intake. Hope this will help me shed off some weight.

Just log your food and see where you can make better choices that fit into your goals and exercise helps, but weightloss is mostly diet.
