Food contentment or food boredom?

I just read this blog post from Mark Sisson, the guy who developed the Primal Blueprint.

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/how-important-is-food-variety/#more-22102

I had never really considered the difference between being content with particular food, versus being bored with food.

This is what I posted in the comment thread:

"…I’m a deeply regimented eater also, but at the other end of the spectrum. I used to eat a lot of the same junk over and over without varying, but it was exactly that…junk. I didn’t get morbidly obese haphazardly! Since taking steps towards changing my diet…that has been a huge challenge for me, getting monotonous about eating for the better while still trying to keep it interesting. For someone where I’m at right now, finding happy monotony with healthy food looks pretty bleak. I’m on the path, it’s just something of a struggle. I definitely think going more primal will help!"

I'm curious...Has anybody else struggled with boredom over eating the same thing over and over or do you see it more as being content with what you're eating. I think there may be huge benefits in eating a wider range of food, only from a narrower "family" of foods. But what do I know? I have yet to record a single pound lost after almost 2 weeks. (I'm confident the Friday morning weigh-in will change that though!)

No I don't get bored, I allow myself variety. Plus, I have my kids pick a new fruit & vegetable every week at the farmer's market and I research healthy ways to prepare these produce items that I've never purchased before. And my spice cabinet & herb garden are almost overflowing, so I can always change up a meals ingredients for a new flavor twist.

I'm always experimenting within a fairly narrow range of ingredients.

What was an omelette and veggies one week is a quiche the next and part of a stir fry the following week. When I buy something too exciting I forget to eat it!

The food boredom is my issue. I have eaten so much chicken, that for right now I'm on a chicken hiatus. My husband can eat the same thing over and over without any isssues, but it just gets boring and then it doesn't taste good and then i dont eat it then i'm hungry causing bad decision and thus a downward spiral. So this time i have decided I dont have to cut out my tasty steak, i just make it smaller, and utilize fish and other things, still don't eat pork either though, don't really care for pork, except as sausage and bacon.

Interesting article. I think it always gets back to calories in and caloires out. I'd like to say that I like variety, but if I look at my food diary, I'm not as adventurous as I'd like to think I am, especially when it come to breakfast. I think it's because I'm on auto pilot in the a.m. and I'm not trying to think too hard.. However, I do have more variety than I did when I was not watching what I ate, for instance I had a great lunch today from the buffett at Whole Foods - they had a middle eastern theme today it was mostly vegetarian. I was able to get a variety small portions and its was very tasty.

I like to try new things on the weekend, but during the week, if I'm super busy which is most times, I go with what I know is both healthy and satisfying, tried and true.

Have you thought of trying spices? They are ZERO calories and make anything taste better, and you can take the same food and make it taste completely different by just changing the spice. I once lost over 70 pounds on a shake diet (under medical supervision) and stayed true to the diet by putting in Thai spices one day, Mexican the next, salmon seasoning the next, etc. Get active in the spice cabinet and have a ball!

Very interesting article. This actually hit home for me, especially since I have been "eating out of my comfort zone" recently due to being on vacation and out with friends. I am actually much more satisfied with eating the foods that I eat day after day than I am when I choose something outside of my meal plan, and although I do not follow the primal diet, I have found great success and feel very satisfied with what I eat ( ie. I do not have cravings for sweet or fattening foods.)

Perhaps the key is to finding what meal plan works for you and when you find it fulfilling, stick to it. I have no plans to change me eating habits in the future, although I am always interested in trying healthy, whole food options!

Chicken is DEFINITELY my staple. The right spices and it can become Mexican, Chinese, Indian, etc. It and lean beef with raw vegetables is usually enough to make me happy. I'm trying to get my wife to embrace salmon a little more...but we're getting there.
