Lower back stretches?

I'm needing to get back in the groove of being more active but my lower back hurts when I wake up in the morning. Any suggestions on lower back stretches and exercises to strengthen that area? Thanks in advance! -Tara

The lower back is not an area you want to be stretching. Lower back pain is usually a sign that you're moving/using your lower back too much when you're exercising. Stretching your hips, upper back, and chest might relieve some of the pain.

Also, I would focus on strengthening your hips and anterior core, opposed to doing exercises for your lower back.

What activities have you been doing more of?

Maybe it's your bed? I've been sleeping on a latex bed for almost 10 years with no back pain. My previous cheapo mattress would beat me up. Look into latex and memory foam (and Sleep Number perhaps).

It could also be a weak core or bad posture during the day. I might practice posture techniques and bodyweight (squats, step-ups, bridges, planks, push-ups, pull-ups) training and progress to compound lifts.
