Health Related Weight Loss

I have just turned 55, am a 6 Ft Male, and currently weigh 18 Stone. As an ex Rugby player I am carrying injuries that are made worse by carrying too much weight, and am also suffering from border-line diabetes which, as yet, is just diet controlled. I am having to take blood pressure tablets and Statins since, as registered diabetic, my GP wants to keep my BP and circulation good.

My theory is that with a better diet and a good exercise programme I will not only lose weight, but will lower my BP and not need the medication - pity the app doesn't give the ability to monitor BP changes as well as weight loss, since this would be a very good indicator.

My exercise programme will focus initially on Speed Walking, cycling and the T25 programme, with calorific value being monitored by a heart rate monitor - bring it on ! :)

Remember that sometimes lifting weights can burn more calories than cardio.

I have a fair share of limitations myself and speaking from experience, going back to the gym and staying as active as you might have been before is tougher than other people think. The trick to get going and jumpstart your new goal is to admit and come to the realization that those good ol' days are over and you have to start from scratch. I often tell myself that I am weak and I'm ok with it. It honestly beats being depressed on the same fact and not going to the gym at all.

Depending on how severe your injuries are, you're most likely to have inadequate body strengths. Know where your strengths are and keep on lifting the same weight and gradually increasing the reps while the rest of your body starts to level itself out by increasing the weight on your weak links. Try not to over do it and don't get caught up on what other people are lifting at the gym. Knowing your own limits can prevent flaring of an existing injury. Also, try going to the gym by yourself first. People tend to try to keep up with the stronger partner, and sometimes, that might trigger existing injuries as well.

I wish you a speedy recovery on whatever your injuries are and awesome results in the future.
