Protein powder

I have a bag of protein powder in the house (hubby started using it then stopped when he had to stop exercising for medical reasons), I was thinking of using it to use it up rather than wasting it but when do I use it? I don't do massive workouts but I do HIIT sessions at home and try to use TRX trainer.

Add it to milk in a shaker, shake it up, drink it.
Protein timings are irrelevant so pre/post/intra work-out makes such a minute difference that it is best ignored. Just drink it when you feel like a snack.1 -

That's great thank you, I just made a homemade iced coffee and put a scoop in it and it tastes lovely0 -

I sometimes add a scoop to my morning coffee. i add it to yogurt, oats and all sorts of desserts. I use optimum nutrition choc/ peanut butter casein .1

This may sound obvious and stupid but make sure you add it into your daily calorie allowance. The number of people that take them for "recovery" but forget the calorie content, is staggering.5

Oh I did that after I made the iced coffee I created a recipe in the recipe builder it was over 100cals so glad I thought to do it1 -

The thread I linked above was specifically about this subject and nobody posted any science/refs that backed up the "heat damages/reduces bio-availability of p/powders". If you've got refs which state otherwise post them up. I'm happy to change my position based on evidence.0 -

BTW: You cook an egg and you denature the protein in the white (it's the denaturing that makes it go white) but the digestive system chops it all up into component amino acids all the same. Also, in cheeses the casein is denatured by enzyme action - You still get all the protein on consumption.0 -

To be fair, I'd always believed the "don't cook it" message, and even threw away a batch of unpalatable protein powder because of fear that baking it would negate the benefit.
It was only recently that I learnt I was wrong.0 -

You use it if you aren't reaching your protein goals that day through normal diet. It doesn't do anything different than food, time is irrelevant.0

Protein Muffins are really nice as a snack, or Protein pancakes.Just be cautious of what you put in them. For my muffins i use egg whites, 2tea spoons of greek plain yogurt,unsweetened coco powder and stevia (optional) or I drizzle a tea spoon of honey when they are baked.0
