Price is a definate factor, but don't get locked into a long term contract. Gyms go out of business all the time, and they WILL make you deals if you fight for them. Close to home, work, whatever is important. Chances are if you have to go out of your way you won't go when you're tired or not in the mood etc. Happy Shopping!

    I've just joined Fitness 19. I think it's great. It'll never cost more than $19 a month, and there's no contract. (:

lots of gyms will offer a free trial (usually a week), you can do that with all the gyms and see which one you like the best and negotiate from there

Keep it close to you! If you have several around the house feel free to check them out. Go in ask questions, walk around and compare your choices. Also, depending on your job hours you may want to look into a 24hour gym.

I LOVE my Planet Fitness! Only $10 a month, no contracts and lots of cardio and weight machines to pick from. I know some people don't like the "no lunk" policy but being a smaller woman, it doesn't bother me, I don't plan to become a body builder or anything. I definitely have gotten my money's worth there and the staff at mine are always nice and friendly and it's always being cleaned. I joined over 18 months ago and still go regularly although I had never belonged to a gym before. They don't offer aerobic and other classes but do show you how to use machines and have a trainer to help you if you want to work on a certain part of your body,etc.. I don't like group classes anyway.

Honestly, you won't need a gym with a sauna, pool, cardio classes etc. As long as its got a good weight room and cardio room its all good. I go to Fitness for 10(must be like the Fitness for 19 posted above).

If you look at Groupon, kijiji etc have group coupon sales that have gym classes all the time for cheap cheap prices!

I'm a Bally's guy but for the bang for the buck, I hear Planet Fitness is very good. All depends on what's around you.

Do you have a YMCA near you? I belong to one. They have everything - even daycare. :)

    Where are you located?

NYSC, BSC, PSC and WSC. are offering deep discounts to students (blast you just graduated!) and teachers (maybe you have an education degree?). First gym I've ever belonged to so I can't compare. Has lots of locations so there is 2 near home & 2 near work for me. I'd kinda like more yoga classes even with multiple locations schedules to pick from.

I hear CRUNCH is great with classes, but quite pricey.

I've heard that BALLY's is awful no matter how cheap the deal.

PLANET FITNESS advertise great prices, but haven't a clue as to the facilities.

I know some people don't like the "no lunk" policy

What in the heck is a "no lunk" policy?

Help me out here (I am pretty gym-ignorant)...what does no lunk policy mean?

I don't know where you are or what's near by... but I belong to two (yes; two) women's gyms, and I love them both. I go to Curves M-F, and I go to Shapes Su-F. I love love love my gym time. At Shapes, I get in great cardio (elliptical, arc, and bikes). Curves is where I'm getting my toning.

I lost a considerable amount of weight several years ago by simply going to Curves 5 days a week and watching what I ate (went from a size 12 to a 4/6 in three months)... this time, I started Curves first, and I just needed more. I used to wait tables, so I had an active lifestyle, so it wasn't coming off like it did the last time. That's what prompted me to join the other.

I love that they're both women's gyms. I don't have to feel self conscious having men around. They both have reasonable monthly rates, but I got a much better deal by paying for it in advance (I paid for Curves for 1 year and got a 20% discount. I paid for Shapes for six months and got three free months).

I'd find someplace that has good hours (if they close too early, then you may not get there with a busy lifestyle). If you aren't comfortable with men around while you workout, then you should find a women's gym.

it means like no grunting, purposely dropping the weights all that jazz

The "no lunk" thing is basically that you can't grunt when lifting weights, and I think the gym doesn't really like super buff people to be there (that's the people that are always grunting). But I don't go there so maybe someone can describe it better.

I choose the gym i did , which happens to be a bailys, because of locations. Its right around the corner from my house, i have to pass it on my way home from work. No excuse not to stop and work out, and by the way i do love it, and the people there.

oh and i grunt sometimes when i when working out an pushing myself, and i am surely not buff.

i don't belong to a gym, per se. my city has several rec centers around. the one i go to has a fitness room and a pool. for fitness room access only, it's $70 a year. i think with pool access it's $150 a year. they do have zumba a few days a week which has a $3 charge per class. also, they no longer have a trainer on staff (that i know of) so that sort of stinks. if you're basing your choice on cost, the rec centers are a good option.

I use Planet Fitness because they are cheap - memberships are either $10 or $19 depending on if you want to only use 1 gym or use all of their gyms. I do the $19 membership because I have gym by my house and by my office so it is sometimes easier for me to use whichever is closer at the time ... anything to keep me motivated to actually work out!

They do have a no "lunk" rule to help keep their gyms a "judgement free zone". They really discourage the typical heavy weight lifters so they don't want the body builders going there so they have the no grunting and dropping weights alarm. It is mostly aimed to increase their profit by targeting the population of people that sign up for gyms and don't really go that frequently. They want to keep those people happy and comfortable and for some reason those people are intimidated by heavy lifters.

I dunno but either way it is the cheapest gym in my town and it has a ton of cardio machines with a good number and variety of tv shows playing. They also have simple easy to use weight machines for beginngers like me. They do not have all the group classes but you can sign up to meet with a trainer for free to get a workout plan tailored for you. It works for me but is definantly not for everyone!

Basically, they don't actually want to to try, from what I see.

Probably so they don't have anyone who knows how to deal with injury on site.

I do the groupon/living social/ generic daily deal sites. You can get things like unlimited bootcamp for 30 days, or 20 yoga classes, and other 30 day passes to gyms for super cheap. There are even some Now Deals that have classes at a gym close to you that you can get for under $10 a lot of the time.
  • I go to planet fitness! There are 2 plans, basic one is $10 a month, thats just for working out. $20 a month for working out, massage chairs, unlimited tanning and red light therapy. I really like it. The "no lunk" is no slamming weights down or grunting really loud, they do not even have a scale there because they said they want a judgement free zone. You can quit anytime, but you do have to pay a fee.

I go to Gold's and it's only $5 a week no contract. Cardio and weight classes, plenty of machines, free weights, and they know my name. Highly recommend.
