Working parents - what's your workout schedule look like?

Just wondering how you juggle your schedule between work and family and taking care of YOUR SELF? Where do you fit in your workouts during your day? Is it something you schedule in or do you just fit them in where ever you find a gap in your schedule? How many times a week and for how long a duration?

I'm between careers now, but when I worked full time days, I would be under the bar between 430-500am weekdays. I would wake at 350am and have my first cup of coffee later.
Oh and I'm a powerlifter too. No easy machine workouts either with bench and squat three times a week.2 -
I lift 4x/wk. Usually Sunday afternoon, Monday morning, Wednesday evening, and Friday morning. On Tuesday and Saturday I try to get in a run.
I have a home gym to make thinos easier. My husband works 12 hour shifts based on a 2 week schedule. Getting out to a gym before or after work would be extremely difficult. On days I run I have to be back by 6 a.m. so our daughter isn't home alone. Days I lift, it doesn't matter since I mostly do it at home. She's 9 and I'm fine with her being alone for a bit during the day but not comfortable with her home alone while sleeping.
The only other thing I'd add is that I check our schedules every 2 weeks to see if anything needs to be rearranged. I can move most of my workouts up a day or back a day or 12 hours if necessary.
My husband mostly doesn't workout but he knows it is important to me and encourages me to take time for it. He knows I am healthier and happier when I do it and he reaps the benefits as much as I do.5 -
My gym opens at 5 AM, I'm there when the lock is turned. Unless you have babies, usually nobody is wanting/needing you for an hour or so at 5AM.3

I lift 4 days/week (Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) and bike on Saturday. During the work week I am home by 4:45pm. I'm probably in my garage gym by 5 and work out for about an hour, then it's dinner, homework with the kids, and general family time. I make it a priority, just like my job.3

My primary mode of exercise is biking, which I do down in the basement, in front of a computer (virtual traine/Zwift). I used to run a lot, but knee pain/trouble makes it a lot less enjoyable now-a-days.
I bike around 130 miles a week which typically takes around eight hours over the course of a week. Depending on what I have on my training calendar I ride in the morning before work or when I get home. If it's a 30 minute recovery ride, I'll do it in the morning. Longer rides are done at night.
I'm typically on the bus heading to work at around 6:30A and back home around 6P.
When it's all said and done, it really comes down to the importance of exercise for you and what you are willing to put off/compromise. If you take a step back and honestly analyze your day you will see that doing some form of healthy activity is easily achieved by taking as little as 30 minutes to do it.
My sister has her three kids chase after her on their bikes while she runs. There is always time to exercise while still being a caring parent.
While I bike I watch TV/Netflix. I watch the same amount of shows weekly (maybe a little more now) but no longer from the "couch" position.2 -

I lift 4x/week during the week. I get up at 4:45am, gym from 5-6 home by 6:15 to get the kids up and going. I usually run a couple times a week on lunch then on the weekend go for long mountain bike rides, hikes, snowshoe ect..1

That's not to say that I'm not flexible. I have a husband and 3 kids; I have to be flexible! I learned that it's okay to make time for myself too.1 -
My boy is 15 now, so I have a lot of freedom. Unfortunately I didn't start getting fit until about 2 years ago. However, there are lots of people that I see doing a lot while their kids are with them. You could create yourself a 20 minute workout while the kids are eating their snack or doing a craft, coloring, playing at the park. You don't need fancy machines or a gym, just use your own body weight. If you need help creating a workout visit Popsugar Fitness finder on the internet and they will create a workout based on what you have and the time. If you usually sit and watch TV in the evening, why not workout instead!!! I still have to be mindful of my time as my boy is involved is very competitive baseball so I like to get up at 5am and go for a run.1

Jemhh - I find your post most relatable. My husband works long hours and commutes to the city. I also work long hours, but I run my own business from home. I do the majority of the planning/parenting/meals/taxi driving/etc throughout the work week. I like that you plan so well in advance. I think that would help so much - even writing it in on the calendar. I have a bit of a home gym as well - I do find it easier to workout at home - BIG TIME. I used it religiously up until a few months ago when life got a little crazy. But I friggin miss it and am ready to fight for the time again. Thanks for the inspiration!!!1

Wish I had made the commitment to my health when my kids were little. I never had time to go to the gym with being gone at work 10 hours a day and daycare pickup. When I tried to do a walking video at home they would always need something and interrupt me. When they stopped daycare and a gym opened up in town I started focusing on me. I go everyday of the week after work. Tue/Thur/Sunday are weight lifting days, the others are cardio. I make it part of my day now and schedule appointments etc. around my exercise.1

That's fantastic advice Joanna2012B. I actually work with children too, so this applies even more. You are absolutely right - it doesn't have to be fancy. I need to make use of the quiet moments in my life, even if I can just fit in a few minutes of some simple exercises.1

I go to the gym M-F in the morning. I'm usually up at 4:30, which means I try to be in bed by 9:45 (after my oldest goes to sleep) and asleep by 10. I'm not going to lie - I am NOT a morning person, and this wasn't an easy decision for me. I spent YEARS telling myself the story about how "I could never get up that early", and then I just decided to DO IT. Every day. Like it's my job. And now it's a habit, just like all the other things in life that I "have to do".
My husband gets the kids up and off to school/daycare in the morning, and I go to work early and leave early so I can pick them up. It's truly a team effort. On the weekends, we exercise together as a family by riding our bikes or going to the park/playground and running around.

I work day shift 8 or 12 hours. I usually work out in the morning on my days off while the kids are in school. I weightlift at the gym 3 days a week for an hour after work since it's right on my way home, and I do my HIIT workouts in the late evening after dinner.2

I walk my dog each morning, no excuses. Then when I get off work will either go ride (horses), head to the work gym or do a workout at home after dinner. There is time in the day if you ask me, it's just making it important enough to give the time and like others said it doesn't have to be fancy. Do a dance party in the living room with your kids.
On the weekends we hike as a family, play football, kickball, etc. together. I also *try* to get into work early so I can leave to workout, get my kids and start dinner by 5:30.2 -

Typical schedule, with a single 8 year old:
up at 6:00am, out the door to work at 6:15. M/W gym at lunch. T/Th run at lunch. Get home about 5pm. T/W/TH/F run after work for about an hour. Sat Sun, run for 60-90 minutes. Sat bike for about 60 min.
Sunday is tough with Field hockey in the spring and fall and girl scouts from the weekend after next till June. I can run during either though - field hockey practice is 90 minutes.1 -

My wife is really supportive of me working out. My daughter goes to bed at 9pm every night. So I typically go to the Gym after she goes to bed. Or I'll be a member of the Dawn Patrol Running group or cycling group on the weekends and knock out my workout before she gets up.
Or well kill two birds with one stone I'll go on a 55-60 mile ride around the city in the morning and meet them somewhere for an early lunch.1 -

If you work with children, why not fit in a 5 minute dance party at some point during the day. Pick a catchy tune and get the kids involved!! Not only will it get you moving, but them as well!!1 -
I work at 7am Mon-Fri. I get up at 4:30 and I'm in the gym by 5:30 (I commute to work and the gym is 2 blocks from work). If I get a day off or sometimes on weekends if I'm feeling it then I'll go for a run around my neighborhood, 3-5 miles depending on the day. I can go to a gym closer to my house on the weekends too that has daycare but my son doesn't love the daycare and I'm not usually super motivated to work out on weekends beyond just running.
eta: sometimes we have a long lunch and I'll go for a 30-45 walk with a coworker or if I have time I'll go to the gym (especially if I skipped the morning session, I'll bring my gym bag anyway just in case).1 -

I do actually stay very active throughout the day. I dance, climb, play sports, etc with them. I also do active things with my own children - sports, biking, swimming, dancing, wrestling and the list goes on. Lots of naturally occurring cardio in my life. Truly. Though I love to run, what i really want right now is to work on toning. Not sure how to incorporate that into my day. I think I will try to carve out some time during 'nap' today. This time is usually used for clean up and lesson prep, food prep and what not, but maybe I can try moving some things around.

I am usually watching TV in bed around 9:30, asleep by 10. Including on the weekends. I am much more of a morning person than night

M-F, I wake between 4:30am - 4:45am. Gym time is 5:15 - 6:30. I go home, shower, dress and wake my kids for breakfast, dress, etc. I get them off to school at 8:30am and then I go to work until 5:30pm. I should really go to bed earlier than I do, considering how early I get up, but it's usually around 10pm.1
