Looking for new ways to exercise which will not aggravate my umbilical hernia. I have been doing mostly aerobic step and dancing such as Zumba & mixed fit. Any squats, bending or lifting will aggravate or worsen my hernia. I am trying to lose as much weight possible very quickly to undergo hernia repair surgery. Any ideas on different exercise moves or workouts?

Have you spoken to a doctor about possible exercises that are safe for your condition?

Yes but they're not very helpful. One would think a doctor would be knowledgeable in what to do and what to avoid as far as exercise with a hernia. All I was told was to lose 50-100 lbs before surgery. So I started a HIIT type of workout with squats meanwhile my hernia got worse and after some of my own research I find out that squats increase the size of a hernia and you can't lift more than 10lbs. I was lifting about 30lbs. The recommendations for hernia suffered are to stay with low impact workouts that don't involve much use of the core which obviously would aggravate the condition.

Yes it's a great alternative but with 3 little boys ages 5 and under it's not always possible for me to get to the pool

Are you eating at a calorie deficit? Controlling your intake is where most weight loss progress is found. Exercise is good for fitness generally but your hernia limits that and makes reduced intake even more of a focus.

First I'd go to a physiotherapist who should be able to advise on exercise that won't aggravate your hernia.
Second, focus on your eating - don't set yourself up with a massive deficit, but pick a reasonable goal and stick at it. Losing 100lb is not going to happen very fast, no matter how much you want it to, so finding something you can stick to is critical.

It is more about your food intake than exercise. Make sure you are weighing and logging everything you eat. Walking should be good for you. Walk around the park whilst the kids play. Try to do 30 minutes more than you currently walk. Even 15 to give you a bigger deficit.

One or two sessions with a physical therapist can get you started in the right direction.
Also research some floor or chair exercises that will help.

Keep in mind that weight loss mostly happens in the kitchen.

Please take my advice don't lose more than the recommended two pounds a week. I am paying for not listening now. I have lost 90 pounds since January. For the last month I have been having gallbladder attacks so bad it takes me to my knees. It's the worst pain I have ever had in my life. That's coming from a woman who has given birth four times and twice with pitocin when being induced.

I started with no particular diet eating foods I already eat. I cut out all pop because I was consuming over a 1000 calories a day in that alone. I started with just eating serving sizes of the foods I already ate. It was a real eye opener seeing what a serving size was verses what I thought it was. It's so easy to serve yourself twice the amount recommended sometimes more. Get you a food scale and start from there.

There are a lot of workouts on Youtube. I do the walk at home ones. If yoj do them they are logged as low impact aerobics. And there people that doesn't think it's a workout. Try it for a week or so.
