Can anymore suggest a good, but not so expensive heart rate monitor? Do I really have to spend $80 to $100 for one? Also, do I need to get one that comes with a chest strap?

Check on Ebay... I got a polar f6 with a chest strap(yes you need one) for 28 bucks!!! It is cute, pink, and does everything I need!!0

The ones with the chest straps are widely regarded as much more accurate. Most people will recommend the Polar FT4 or FT7. You should be able to find an FT4 for under $100.0

I have the same Polar F6. Best money you can spend. Yes - you need a chest strap.0

Check out the Polar FT4 on amazon.com I think the most accurate hrm's come with chest strap......the chest strap that came with the FT4 is comfortable, I forget that I am wearing it.0

I have a New Balance N4, it comes with a chest strap and I love it so much. It's pretty basic, but it works for what I use it for. I paid 89.99 but you can find them way cheaper online.0

I havet he Polar FT7 & yes, chest strap. I think for women, it's nothing new as most of us are used to haivng a bra on our chest.0

Polar is the most recommended but I bought a Timex on Amazon for $40...and yes, make sure you get one with a chest strap :happy:0

I am not sure how cheap you will find them but you will get much better results if you have the chest strap. Otherwise it will not be a consistent reading of your HR so the results wouldn't be as accurate.0

Chest strap is a must. I bought one from Wal-mart for about $45.00. It was showing a crazy amount of calories burned! So I took it back and got the Polar F7. It was $100 at ****'s sporting goods. Much, MUCH more accurate.0

Does this model calculate the calories burned automatically for you?0 -
Yes you need one with a chest strap and Yes, you should be spending around 60-100 dollars for one.
You get what you pay for with an HRM, and if you buy a cheap one now, you'll just be paying more in the long run to buy the one that you should have bought in the first place.
I have the Polar FT7 which I bought for 79.99 off of drugstore.com. I like it a lot.. it's very easy to use and set up.0 -
