After years of being overweight, I finally kicked the bucket, downloaded the MFP app to my phone and have been doing pretty good so far, with tracking and exercising, but am a little worried about the next 3 weeks when I will be on a long dreamt of holiday in the US.

Will mainly be travelling in the Southern States, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi etc. with a long time gal pal, my main problem being its easy enough to keep on top of things at home in London when you can cook and freeze and plan your meals for the week, and stay motivated to exercise, but on holiday Im getting really worried that I will lose the run of myself completely, especially with the heat thats going to be there, there wont be much chance of my usual 7 miles of fast walking a day :grumble:

Does anyone have any tips theyd like to share with me about staying on track while on holiday, (note Im currently sitting in my living room thinking about cheesecake factory, so all diversions appreciated) and also about not letting myself get into a cycle of "well im on holiday I can work it off when I get home"

I live in the south and get ready for the heat and humidity. lol Drink lots of water to stay hydrated and choose veggies and anything that is grilled. Try to stay away from the fried foods. I know it will be hard. We have lots of seafood along the coast. Steamed or grilled will be much better for you. Pack lots of healthy snacks. I hope this helps.

Limit indulgences to no more than once per day. Hydrate as much as possible. Stay accountable by logging food before you eat. Even if it's RIGHT before. Be active whenever you can!

Above all else, enjoy your trip!

Well the south has some of the best food ever! But one thing my gf and I did when we went to NY was we split EVERYTHING. It was always plenty and since I know portion sizes in the south 3-4 people can eat off just 1 plate sometimes!
However, when its as hot as it it right now my appetite is less and less so maybe that might happen. Like someone else said LOTS OF WATER. Its 105 in Texas today and its not getting any cooler anytime soon.
    Enjoy your trip!

Move as much as possible, pay attention to the "I'm full" signs your body gives you and don't feel like you have to finish everything on your plate (remember those massive American portions!). If you go out to eat don't be afraid to ask for a doggie bag (I'm an American living in London and I know it's not really done here but at home it's totally normal). I've been on loads of short trips this summer to Paris and all around the UK and I've eaten pretty much whatever I have wanted (within reason) and drank lots of wine but I made sure on each trip that I walked/moved as much as possible and I was fine. Have fun but remember all of the hard work you've put in up until this point!

If you will be staying in hotels, check to see if they have a fitness room and/or use their pool. I did this recently when I was out of town. Otherwise, as a southern gal, I can only advise you to "be careful". The south is known for it's fried chicken, biscuits n gravy, etc. Use common sense when it comes to menu items, and if you choose to indulge, watch your portion size. Have fun!

All great ideas and suggestions for you have been posted. The one thing I can recommend is do some excerise (walking) early in the morning before the heat of the day sets in. It will still be humid and a little hot but it's lots more tolerble.
