CRAP! Going to a potluck/movie night with a bunch of people at a friend's house! I'm crazy worried about staying on my diet since I really want to do good and no one there is trying to lose weight! Should I bring my own food? Would that look bad since no one else would have the option of the same things?

Stop by the local grocery and pick up a fruit tray. Eat on that - DONT eat stuff that makes you fat. Bottom line, if its man made or if the ingredence has stuff you need to have a doctors degree in Chememstry to understand, then dont eat it!

Bring something healthy enough for everybody (potluck style) and then eat in moderation and track what you can.

portion control... you don't ahve to eat everything, you dont have to eat anything.... the fruit tray idea is great... and bring a bottle of water... that way you know you have some thing non soda to drink..... you can do this.... and if you slip ... its okay tomorrow is a new day
  • I bring my own food places. As does a friend of mine whose in OA. Sometimes you get weird looks, and sometimes people tell you that what you have looks awesome. You can also eat before you go. It's all about being comfortable in the end. You may just end up being the inspiration they need to change their own eating habits!

Find the lowest calorie food item there eve if all the foods are high calorie and eat only a little. If you find yourself craving foods just tell yourself how hard you have been working to stay on your diet and that your not going to ruin it for a few seconds of happiness. Also eat something before you go so your not hungry when you get there. Good luck :)

They also say to choose only a couple things to eat, rather than sample "one of everything"... because that always ends up leading to a LOT of food!

Our friends have a potluck every friday night so I do this every week. I always bring something healthy that I know the calorie count of, and at least one other thing, usually low fat chips and try to stick to mostly those. I also eat any veggies, as there is usually veggies and dip. I have to admit the dip is hard to avoid. I also have a very small portion of other options that I want to eat and log as best I can. I always make sure to exercise on Fridays so I have a few more calories to work with. I also don't drink anything other than water.

At the movies, DON'T EAT THE POPCORN. Sip a diet soda or a bottle of water, and if you need something to eat, try a couple of pieces of licorice.

For dinner - I'd enjoy, but eat small portions, and hit the low cal stuff hard.

    Keep drinking that water!

    Good luck!

Great idea! I was nominated to bring fried chicken (naturally), but I'm buying it so I'm not tempted to eat it while cooking (one of my bad habits I'm working on breaking). However, I'll get a big bean salad for everyone and snack on that, since it's only 100 calories per 1/2 cup!!

I would bring a fruit or veggie tray to share. If you mess up tonight, don't despair...just dust yourself off and get back on track tomorrow (I know it can be hard sometimes). Burn some extra calories today if possible and workout tomorrow for sure. Have fun, don't obsess, these things will come up so you have to figure out how to deal with them. Good luck!

i usually bring something like the suggested fruit that is calorie friendly for me! usually i'll stick with that and/or tell people "i'm not hungry, my stomach's been bothering me today" to avoid people offering me more food. that sounds like a lie until i remind myself that my stomach WILL BE bothering me if i eat too much!

You will be so proud of yourself if you make the right choices and most likely all your friends will be proud too. If they are not, it's that they have a guilty conscience. Blaze a trail girl. Fruit tray is awsome idea, also the water too!! You can do this. I will be facing the same situation tonight also. I 'll think of you when they pass the cake and I will pass it up!!!! :drinker:

Another tip - someone said to stick to water. This is very good because if you're like me and you have a few alcoholic drinks, you'll lose a lot of willpower and wind up eating a ton! :)
