    Both of those are carbohydrates.

Where is the rest of your meal? Did you not have any protein or fat with it?

You can eat anything you like and lose weight, you just need to keep your calories less than you burn. Eat food that makes you happy.

Sweet potatoes and broccoli are fine. Add some more protein with it, perhaps. More filling and balanced. Did you not use any fat in cooking? Most do, and that also would make it more balanced/help access the vitamins.

To lose weight you just need to eat fewer calories. You do not have to avoid carbohydrates to lose weight.
Avoiding eating any vegetables or fruits just because they have carbs is stupid IMO as they are filled with important nutrients, fiber and often very low calorie.

Often when I think I want carbs, what I actually need is protein and fat.

I want "carbs" about as often as I want to go to Disneyworld (which is never, I'm old and a curmudgeon, I'm beginning to fear). Not because I don't like plenty of foods that are primarily carbs (including broccoli and sweet potatoes, both of which are sometimes the subject of my wanting) but because when I want a food it's much more specific than "carbs."
