Best motivator – fear

I don’t know if this is will motivate anybody, but I am going to write it anyway.
In my case nothing motivated me until the moment, when the doctor informed me that there might me something in my heart and mentioned possible methods of treatment. He added that losing weight might make the procedure less likely.
That immediately got me motivated. Correction. It got me EXTREMALY motivated. I was determined to do anything that is humanly possible to lose weight. The fear of surgery was the strongest motivator and so far it is a very effective motivator for me.
I am a positive minded person and strongly believe in using positive approach in influencing other people’s behaviors, whether it is raising children or managing subordinates. But no positive motivator was strong enough for me to lose and keep the weight off previously.
I do not wish anybody to get to the point that fear would have to motivate you to lose weight. Be smart now and use other people’s “experience” in this area. The plaque that builds up inside our coronary arteries can’t be removed. Once the buildup of plaque occurs, it stays there. Over time, plaque hardens and narrows our coronary arteries. This condition is the #1 cause of death for both men and women in the U.S.
I want to include a positive message to everybody struggling with their weight: it can be done and there are ways to make it easier. Weight loss can be achieved without exercise, calorie counting and most importantly without being hungry.
Having received my super motivation, I lost 46 pounds last summer and kept the weight off for a year. Four months ago I resumed my weight loss efforts on the way to my healthy weight and so far I lost an additional 13 pounds.

If only I could scare the *kitten* out of all my patients like that....0 -
In April, my doctor called me to ask me"what in the heck was going on?" because my LDL was 177, a huge jump from my previous number. I told him that I would do my best to lose weight and to exercise in order to bring down the number without having to take medication. So, I have lost 17 pounds, brought my BMI from overweight to normal and kept on working at it every day. Hopefully when I go back in August, my number will be normal again. My genes are against me for high cholesterol, but I am doing what I can to be healthier!
Congrats on your weight loss and healthier living!!0 -

Yes, I agree. Fear and vanity keep us motivated :bigsmile:0

The fear of losing my husband motivated me. Once he was diagnosed with diabetes I got very motivated to help him. In the process it helped me.0

Congrats on the weight loss. Sometimes a scare is exactly what is needed to motivate.0

Congratulations.

teehee I do it all the time. It's a little easier in the ER when people actually think they might die as opposed to a routine clinic visit. I call those minutes of sheer terror a "teachable moment". Seeing all the health problems that arise from obesity, deconditioning, and a poor diet is VERY motivating for me...0
