Hi,
I'm from cologne/germany
I have done Keto for 8months and I reached my goal-weight in February.
Keto= a maximum of 20g carbs a day
And max. 20 carbs MEANS max. 20carbs ( thats what I used MFP for)
Not:
"I'm not drinking soda and don't eating any cake anymore-150g carbs a day lowcarb"
thats not how this works!
I maintained my weight for 6 months now eating mostly "normal carby food" again but also watching my calories
I don't want to criticize/lecture anyone I just want to share my experience with you guys/gals.
1. If you are doing extreme lowcarb/Keto DO YOUR RESEARCH!
If you just stop eating carbs and wonder why you feel terrible you are doing it wrong! (Nutrition is EVERYTHING)
There are literally thousands of places online that will tell you everything you need to know about Keto.
(I also linked my favorite place at the end of this text)
2. Keto Is not a diet it is a complete change of your metabolism. (You'll train/force your metabolism to burn fat for energy)
Go see a doctor at least once a month to check your bloodlevels and get nutrition advice.
Drink water like a camel, and watch your magnesium/potassium, you'll need those electrolytes!
3. You Can Do This! (If you feel bad(got the keto flu) it's your electrolytes get potassium and drink some vegetable/chicken broth and stay under 20carbs a day)
4. If you are invited for a birthday party have some carby-cake and eat it! Don't feel bad, you can do again Keto as soon as you get home)
5. If you want to brag or tell me how "dangerous" keto/low carb is and that it don't work for you and that you feel terrible/like zombie because you are just not a low-carb person PLEASE spare me your rant, just visit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/keto/
And read the FAQ, those guys literally changed my life!
12 months ago I was overwight, had way to high blood/pressure/sugar/fat
and today I have non of those problems despite spending 8months eating Eggs and Bacon for breakfast.
KCKO!

Go Keto! Congrats on the weightloss and I hope the maintenance goes well. Did you up your carbs for maintenance? If so by how much?2

You loon awesome! I've been doing keto for three weeks now. I've always struggled with sticking to "diets". Keto is a lifestyle change and I feel like I can really stick with it to finally reach my goals1

congrats on the weight loss but first lets clear the air .Im not bashing keto(tried it in the past before I knew of my health issue) but Keto is not a special fat burning diet, It doesnt change your metabolism. if it did it would be the only way to lose weight, Your body burns fat in a deficit of calories no matter if you eat keto, paleo,HCLF,LCHF,etc.Keto you burn DIETARY fats as fuel. when your body is deprived of carbs your body and liver runs out of glucose/glycogen so it has to use something as an energy source so the dietary fat you eat is used as fuel and your body starts producing ketones.
you can lose fat as long as you are in a deficit. I cant do keto due to a health reason that means I have to limit my fats and cholesterol intake. I am high carb and low fat (cant do keto due to having a health issue to where Ihave to limit fats and cholesterol)and have lost a lot of fat and weight eating this way,due to being in a caloric deficit. If I eat more calories than my maintenance than I will gain weight, its the same if I were to do keto or any other way of eating.
if you were to up protein in keto(above a certain amount which Im sure varies by person also) it could then use that protein as a fuel source by turning it into glucose. which is why its recommended to eat moderate protein in keto, whether or not it can kick you out of ketosis is not clear. now if a person is really active then its possible to stay in ketosis at 100g or less of carb. it can vary. But saying keto changes your metabolism and that it burns body fat as a fuel source is incorrect. This is often the reason why many jump onto the keto train because they think they will lose body fat fast.
if it worked that way what happens when you have very little body fat to burn? your body will need something to run on(dont say thats where dietary fat kicks in) and your body wont care what it uses for energy,it will even use muscle/lean mass especially if you arent getting enough calories/fuel source. If someone wants to try keto because they have a health issue like type 2 diabetes, pcos, insulin resistance or certain seizure disorders thats great, if they want to try it as a way of eating? good but dont do it because you think its a fast way to lose fat and weight. its not you can eat any way and accomplish the same goal of losing fat and weight.4 -
Great job on the weight loss and maintenance! I like eating a keto diet because I feel satiated with it while on other eating plans I have felt hungry all of the time. The high fat and moderate protein fill me up and I no longer have the carb cravings that I used to have. It is so wonderful to eat tasty foods and still lose weight! This is something that I feel like I can do long-term. I've been doing this for 5 weeks now and have lost 16 pounds thus far.0

Congratulations. I'm also doing keto and loving it. I enjoy the variety of recipes I'm finding. When I first did Atkins years ago it felt so restrictive and boring. Now I'm experimenting and learning so much about food and nutrition. It all feels fresh again and I need that.0
