WHY A PLATEAU???? The most common cause

The most common plateau comes when you are trying to get below a weight you haven't been below for a LONG time. for example.... I lost my first 10lbs quickly but I haven't been at my hW for long. I spent a few years at 160lbs... so here is where the plateau comes in. I have spent the past 3 weeks fighting with getting below 160 (even 159.9 hasn't arrived) It has been so long since my body has been below that that it freaks out aka plateaus.... My body now has to readjust. The hardest weight to lose is the weight your body is the most used to carrying. If you have only spent 1 year at 190lbs when you start you will lose well and fairly quick. But if you were 160 for 2-3 years before your weight climbed then that is where you will fight the hardest. But NO WORRIES once you make it, and YOU WILL your loss will speed back up.... This is just an adjustment time for your body. Don't beat yourself up over it.

Great post and very encouraging and to be honest, its where I am at. You are totally right about the length of time your body is used to being at a certain weight. I spent WAY longer at my present weight 140's than I did the 40 lbs heavier I just lost. I haven't seen the 130's or 120's in gosh probably 15 to 20 years!!! I can't wait to get back there!!!! Thanks for the encouraging post!!0

That makes perfect sense but scares me a little bit lol..I have a ways to go and the hardest to lose will be the last 50lbs ! I am motivated to do it, though! (:0 -
THANKS FOR POSTING......maybe there is hope for me yet!!
I am stuck at my current weight and everyone keeps telling me that I should stop trying to lose and this is going to be the weight that body wants and will keep no matter what, but I'm not finished or completely happy where I am. I want to lose 15 more lbs but it just won't budge NO MATTER WHAT!
Very frustrating!!0 -
I dunno....I've been over 200lbs for 6yrs at least....I still haven't hit a plateau...I've lost 11 lbs a month even with doing strength training. I'm now 198, started at 220 in the middle of May.
I think it's more diet and the way your workout goes than anything else.0 -
Thank you so much for your post, I am in the middle of a plateau right now and feel so frustrated!!! I am hanging in there though, and doing what I know to be right....this is not a diet for me, but a way of life...I am so excited to hear that it will pay off soon Thanks again.0

It's been really hard for me to get below 158. I've been there three times and all three times for a LONG time, accumulating water weight, losing it, gaining it, etc. I guess that's familiar territory? Lowest in the last couple years was 150 even... lowest before that was 145.0

This could be the reason, why it's so hard for me to get under 183 lbs :-( I have this weight since 5 years... I'm on the plateau since 3 Month and it's so hard not to quit the whole thing.0

I think that is why so many give up. I totally understand the thinking, but hopefully I can break through. I've been this weight for the better part of 20 years. I don't want it to take 20 years to come off.0

I don't think that always applies. I was at about 165 from age 16 until I got pregnant with my first kid at 26. There were breif momements down around 155 or up around 172. After my first kid (max weight 190) I got back down to 165 easily but stopped. After my second kid 165 was again easy but I kept going and got down to 145. I did NOT hit a plateau at 165. This time, after kid #3, I've hit one at 160 but that's due to not eating well.0

Count me in the group that disagrees. I was bouncing the same 3-5 pounds around for 5 years, but when i got serious, i lost 40 pounds in 6 months. Now if i'm stuck bouncing between 168 and 172 for 3 months, i might change my mind.0

WOW!! Makes so much sense. So tired of hearing "maybe you just don't have anything else to loose?" Maybe I should post pics to prove that one wrong. LOL
Thanks, so what I needed to hear:)0 -
I went from 125 to 150 in about 6mos last year due to quitting an active job to stay at home with my children. I improved my eating habits and have exercised 6 days a wk for the past 5 months and i've only been able to lose 5 lbs!!!! I am not settling for 145! I'll keep at it till it comes off.:flowerforyou:0
