Polar HRM - coded or uncoded?

I have a Polar A1 HRM which the chest strap broke on recently and I'm looking for a replacement. I see there are coded and uncoded transmitters available. Can I use a coded transmitter with an existing watch or are they paired before they're packaged which means I can't pair a coded transmitter with an existing monitor?

I like my Polar H7 Bluetooth chest strap. I use it to transmit to my phone where I can choose any app(s) to receive the data. My impression of Polar is that most of their products will talk to each other -- I remember reading of some guy who discovered that his old pre-bluetooth treadmill could receive data from his new strap. Once you have chosen product(s) you like, you may save yourself some trouble by calling Polar to ask if the 2 products will talk to each other.0
