Not exercising today= no extra calories!

I took a break from exercising today and now I feel guilty. I also have less calories and that is discouraging to look at. The funny thing is even when I do exercise I don't usually use all the extra calories anyway. I don't know why a number can look so depressing. What is everyones oppinion on using the extra calories from exercise? Some of the exercising things listed seem silly to me. The only ones I add are lifting weights, walking, running, swimming. I don't like the "heavy household cleaning one". That just seems like a way to get more calories to eat for the day. Could I be wrong?

i only add what i do in the gym to be honest as i feel that housework is something that i do anyway and do not work up a sweat.
and as to eating them i eat them if i want to

I agree. I only add actual exercise or walking (but I only add walking if I actually walked to town or something like that, not just to the supermarket which is 5 mins away). I'd always rather over-estimate calories and under-estimate exercise to be safe and I can't be sure that I've really burnt that many calories from cleaning.
As for eating exercise calories, I tend to eat some but very, very rarely eat them all back (the only time I do is if I have a naughty takeaway or eat out). If you aren't hungry then don't eat them, and if you are they're there for you.0 -
That's funny. I think this every time I see this pop up in someone's log, which is a lot lately. I agree with both of you. People come up with some crazy/inane stuff to log so they can say they r burning calories0

Unless you have a band that tells you your calories burned you almost need to find a happy medium on the calories that you use. Sometimes I eat them and sometimes I don't.
As far as the heavy household cleaning, that can be one heck of a workout depending on what your doing. Scrubbing tubs and floors even vacuuming burns calories. Just like if someone was mowing a lawn that too burns. You are pushing and pulling. When you are cleaning you bend down to pick things up kind of like squats. Your resistance is your own body unless your lifting and moving things around. If you are not comfortable using the heavy household cleaning they have a light one that may help you not feel so guilty about logging it. I log my cleaning if it is my deep cleaning and I built up a sweat. I don't log cleaning up the kitchen after eating or light pick-up of the family room etc. You need to log how you are comfortable.
Hope this helps. :happy:0 -
This issue comes up a lot on MFP...the way I see it is if I have spent a good few hours working up a sweat cleaning my house from top to bottom, washing my car, cleaning ,windows or doing some gardening etc... you can bet I am going to add it as exercise. I do a brisk walk everyday for 30 minutes and I do water aerobics 2 or 3 times a week so all my other exercise will only come from housework etc. I don't do shreds, zumba or anything too demanding because I know I will never be able to keep this up and as soon as I stop doing this I will put weight straight back on. What I do know is that I will be doing housework and all those other other cleaning chores for the rest of my life so I will always be able to maintain this level of exercise as part of my weight loss programme. I am not doing too bad as I have lost three stone in two years and I am still losing...albeit slowly..so I know it works. So yep.....anything that requires movement.....add it.0

Hmm interesting. Haven't thought of it like that. Your right though, some of those quick shred's people do will not be something they do all the time. Consistency is important! Thanks for sharing.0 -
I use the one of the cleaning ones because doing housework around this place isn't just general picking up a few things here and there. It's daily having to sweep, mop, vacuum, put away laundry, clean an entire play room, scrubbing bathrooms (two small children, toilets, and toothpaste don't mix, just sayin'). Though I have myself set as sedentary, and even if I clean for 3 hours I never usually mark more than 60 minutes for housework. Unless of course I have one of my special moments and rearrange the entire living room, but there's a moving furniture option too.
And no, I don't care if someone thinks it's funny. They can come take care of my family and my household and see how funny it really is day in and day out keeping a home from looking like every store you can imagine vomited all over inside. If I ever thought having to clean my room as a child was dreadful my mother should have warned me what having my own children would be like. :noway:0 -
I know, no exercise days make me so sad. You could have my super low calorie lunch. a dribble of olive oil, diced tomatoes, zucchini, squash, and a 99% fat free smoked turkey frank, a mini pinch of 2% shredded cheddar, basil, thyme, oregano, salt and pepper for under 200 calories, load up on the veggies and fill up that belly!0

Thanks for the recipe. I'm just not that creative when it comes to filling up on veggies. My idea of eating veggies is knawing on some carrots. So ideas like yours are always helpful! :happy:0 -

If the last part is in reference to me saying "That's funny"- I wasn't saying funny ha ha. I meant funny in the sense that it was a coincidence. As in "that's funny I was just thinking the same thing." Relax0 -
I have a HRM and "if" I do clean I would log it because it's not my day to day activity. For me (thanks to hubby who does the cleaning) it is considered extra work lol0
