How does weight training affect the body when on a calorie deficit?

    I've been gaining muscle the whole time while maintaining 1000 to 1400 calorie diet. I went from curling 5 pound weight to curling 15 pound weights in just over a month.

    I think it helps to keep the pounds off.I go to the gym and do 1/2 hr of walking the track, then hit the weights for about 1/2 hr..and all of this with a 1000 calorie..walk walk walk..

    Aside from its metabolic benefits (i.e., speeding up fat loss), resistance training helps spare lean body mass for trained individuals and helps CREATE lean body mass for folks just starting out.

    You will be able to build some muscle, especially if you're just starting. But, with a caloric deficit, or even maintenance level, you will hit a plateau on how much weight you can lift. Additionally, any gains you do make will be at a slower pace than if you had a caloric surplus.
