Off to a good start or fluke water weight

Hi. I'm a 30 yo male with a lightly active day. I started healthier eating about 5 weeks ago with a starting weight of 272. Height is 70 inches. I am today down to 258.i have pretty busy schedule right now so I only get 7-10k steps a day tracked on Fitbit. I'm just wondering if the weight I have lost is just water or if I am actually doing things right? I know my diary is not perfect but I would love some feedback on it! I'm still in experimenting phase and would like a good critique. Thanks in advance.

I looked at your diary and took your calories as an average of 2000 per day. I put your height, age, sex, starting weight and 'light activity' into this calculator: http://www.weightloss-calculator.net/
You say it took you approx 5 week to lose 14lbs. The calculator seems to agree that you should lose around this amount in that time.

Hi! Good job on losing 14 pounds. It can't be all water weight, specially because you eat a sensible amount of calories. However you don't seem to weigh your food and use "slice, cup, 1 large" measurements which are very imprecise. Down the road this could stall your weight loss as you could be eating more than you think.

Second I think those Advocare supplements are a total waste of money (and of 50 calories). You didn't lose because of those but because of a calorie deficit. And you didn't achieve a calorie deficit because of those but because of hard work and will-power.

Congrats on the weight loss. Just keep going. You're doing great.

I took a quick look at your diary. The one thing I noticed from yesterday is the high sodium. You might think about ways to reduce the sodium because that will make you retain water and affect your numbers on the scale.

For example, you could soak dry beans and cook them at home instead of using canned beans (be sure to soak or simmer until mushy because we lack an enzyme to digest the shell).

It COULD all be water weight however it is unlikely. Normally the first 2-6lbs are water when moving to a calorie deficit and/or reducing carbohydrates.

The first 1-2 weeks were mostly water, but anything since should be fat

    You have lost both..

Also the logging is a bit off that I see as well.. The slices, cups of watermelon, tablespoons, etc..these all may not be important early on, but they will the more you lose weigh.

The first few pounds are always water weight but even so who cares? It's the first step which means your body is getting healthy enough to let go and debloat in order to correctly lose fat. It sounds like you've past the water weight and have already started losing fat but either way good for you because 14 is a good starting number!

Thanks for the feedback! I have some muscle right now but would definitely like more. Should I start weight training now as I am trying to lose weight? Or wait until I get down to the weight I want (190) and start a more intense lifting regimen?

Weight train now and you will have an even better bod when you get to 190, then you can really crank it up!
