This is 100% a question that you have to ask your doctor.

Don't ask for a referral to a nutritionist. You want a referral to a registered dietician, preferably one who deals with diabetics.

Good news, it's all about eating food in proportion. Learning to visualize my plate really helped in the beginning. Try and get all your macros (fat, protein, carbs) in every meal. Filling half your plate with veggies will really help.

Off the menu are sugary drinks and dessert. Let it be an apple with a little cheese or PB instead.

I'm trying to imagine a doctor's visit where one is told they have diabetes.

Patient walks into an exam room and takes a seat. Assistant takes vitals and says "The doctor will be right with you." Doctor walks in and says "You have diabetes. Bye!"

If that's what happened, you need a new doctor.

@PaulaWallaDingDong actually that kinda reminds me of when I was diagnosed with Crohn's. I woke up from anesthesia from my colonoscopy and the Dr was like you have severe Crohn's wanna take humira or remicade (I was out of it and he didn't explain anything. It was my first time ever seeing the guy). I was hospitalized for 34 days and the whole time it was like this. The porter showed up to take me for x rays and a picc line and I had no idea he was coming. The nurses put in an extra iv line for a ct scan I didn't know I was having and the dietician came in to talk to me about the tpn the Dr prescribed without informing me. I still see him and he's just as lazy. He actually got super mad when I told him I went to a RD!

That sucks. More eloquent phrasing escapes me at the moment.
