HELP HELP- I need HELP

I am soo close to my goal. I have lost a total of 54 lbs since August of last year. I started running and that has became my main exercise. I am used to burning about 700 calories a work out. I have completed four 5Ks this summer and I started training for a 10K this September. I also joined a running league- well I got up to about running 6 miles two days a week and then running 4.5 about four times a week. One Saturday I overdid it and pulled a muscle (I think) on the outside part of my knee and it goes up into my thigh.- this was approximately three weeks ago now- I have been trying to run off and on hoping it will get better, icing it, taking Ibuprofen. I am too stubborn to stop running. Afterall I have come so far I just can not give up now, esp since I joined the running league I have to get my points in every week. I feel like I am failing and my weight loss has been at a stand still beings I have not been able to run like normal. I am not going to go in to the doctor - to do the unnecesary x-rays, MRIs for what is a pulled muscle, but I can not run now with this pain. I need advise from you guys!! HELP PLEASE.

if it is not better and it has been 3 weeks you better go to the doctor don't you think?
you don't want a permanent injury do you?

Although a doctor might be a good idea to help you get back into things, you might take a look at your running shoes. I was having similar problems a long time ago, and went to a proper running store, where they told me the shoes I was wearing were allowing my foot to turn in, which in turn made my knee joint sore as it tried to compensate for my foot. (hope that makes sense). Perhaps your shoes are worn out.

Look up ITB injury - to see if that might be what you really have. (Illio tibial band, I think)
But the best way to heal, is time off from running! Can you get to a pool and do some "running" in there? It would lift some of the stress from the knees?

I know you don't want to hear it but, you really should go to the Dr!! You could be making it worse not better, especially if it's been 3 weeks now!! This could just be a minor bump in your road to reach your goals if you get to the Dr but, if you don't it could derail it all together! Congrats on your weight loss and motivation with running!!0

Go to the doctor. That's what they're there for. No, not to an ER doctor. To YOUR primary care physician. Don't have one? Go get one! Or, ask your running league about doctors who specialize in sports injuries. I'd think they'd have to have access to something like that. If you keep running on a damaged leg you'll only make it worse.0

This was my first thought too. I've had it a few times and it's sharp pain when I'm running, but not too bad when I stop and walk. Google it and see if that's what you have. If it is, best thing for it is a foam roller. Hurts a lot to roll on it, but it makes a huge difference after you use it. Just heard somewhere that's it from not having a strong core? I think I get it when I get tired and don't have as good of a form for running.0 -
You do have a lifetime. It's not giving up if you need to rest. But if you make your injury permanent then what will you do. Rest it up and if nothing else get a brace. If your good to your body it will repay you. Be well and be blessed. Give yourself permission to rest up so that you can keep going. Be blessed an rock on.0

I looked this up before I posted this on MFP and I thought that could be it, cuz it gets more sore running up and down hills. & not as bad after I am rested. I did order the foam roller on line so I am going to try that and pray for good results- Hopefully it works. Do you have any other pointers to deal with ITB?

I agree with those who say see a DOCTOR. You can be doing more damage to yourself and not realize it. Why take chances with your body? It's not worth it or at least stop running completely for several weeks and see if it improves.0

I agree with going to see a doc....my hubby has knee issues and will put it off. One day at work they were lifting heavy stuff and turning well he turned and something popped....he ended up needing emergency surgery, and the recovery was 12 weeks. so I would say if its been 3 weeks its time to see a doc. It would be awful to get injured worse0
