Weight loss plateau

I've lost 22 lbs in the past 60 days. However, my weight remains unchanged for 2 weeks at 223 and 1200 cal/day. I'm unable to go to the gym because of medical problems but keep active doing household chores.

My husband is dieting too and has run into the same problem. We would appreciate any suggestions. Is there something that we're doing wrong?

You're not in a plateau unless you've been consistent with your intake and not lost weight for AT LEAST 6 weeks. Here's a link to a very helpful discussion on the matter of plateaus. We've all been there. Keep plugging away.

Is time of the month soon? Have you eaten anything salty recently?

Two weeks isn't really a plateau.

But if you really are just maintaining your weight, you may be eating more than you think. How are you measuring your food?

Also, at 223, why is your calorie goal so low?

Or are you experiencing menopause. Menopause bloating (water retention) can mask fat loss way worse than a normal monthly cycle can.

You're not going to lose weight every week, there are all sorts of things included in your body weight other than fat, so things like water weight fluctuations will show up on the scale as well. It's normal to have a couple of weeks here and there where the scale doesn't move.

You have been losing at a very aggressive pace, you will probably not be able to see that much consistent weight loss as you get lighter. Please make sure you're fueling your body - take care of yourself!

You've lost nearly 3 pounds a week in two months. If you havent been accurate with weighing your food and choosing correct entries this will slow your losses.

But.. . Two weeks is nothing to fret about considering how much you lost and how quickly. Is your diary open for viewing? Did you have MFP recalculate your deficit since losing 22 pounds?

Yes, I'm 60 so I no longer have those time of the month issues. However I didn't know that there was a possibility of water retention with menopause. I just assumed I was "home free"...ha,ha

How are you counting your calories? 2 weeks isn't a plateau, but being 223 lbs with such a small caloric intake and no loss, it leads me to believe that your calorie-counting might be off. Are you weighing your food?

Is your diary 100% accurate? The number of days below 800 calories worries me.

One additional consideration: I won't pry by asking what the "medical problems" are, but I'll relate my experience.

I had minor (laparoscopic) surgery while losing weight. For 2-3 weeks (maybe a bit more) after surgery, I held onto a surprising amount of water weight. It masked fat loss. Eventually, the water weight dropped off, and the fat loss revealed itself.

    So, two comments:
    • If your medical problem involves the need for your body to do healing & repair, you may simply be holding onto water weight. If that could be true, don't worry, it will drop off after you're healed.
    • I wish, in retrospect, that I'd reduced or eliminated my calorie deficit for a couple of weeks while recuperating from surgery - i.e., taken my calorie level to or near maintenance for my then-current weight. I think it would've made recovery go better, and weight loss less taxing (I eventually got fatigued from the combo of healing & calorie deficit).

I'll bet you'll see loss again once you're back to normal. Good luck!

We've been going to Soup Plantation several times the past two weeks and realized that the salads were higher in calories than we thought. So we decided to eliminate or decrease the amnts of the various foods added to the plate.

I don't know if that's a "yes" or a "no" to whether or not your diary is accurate. If it is accurate: 9/13 - 325 calories eaten. 9/14 - 645 calories eaten. 9/16 - 520 calories eaten. 9/17 - 297 calories eaten. Those are incredibly worrying numbers. You cannot get the necessary nutrition into your day on those sorts of calories. If your diary isn't being filled out completely, I understand but that would be a good place to start if your weight loss is stalling. If it is being filled out completely, then please consider eating more while you reevaluate your calorie and nutrition goals.

Thanks for reviewing my diary. I had failed to add the foods and amounts eaten on those days so my diary is not accurate. I will be more diligent in recording my foods correctly so that I can evaluate the possible reasons for stalled weight loss. I appreciate your input.
