BC Pills & Weight Gain

This question is for the ladies. I am curious if any ladies out there have noticed significant, or any really, weight gain while taking the LoSeasonique prescription.

A little background on me: I have spent my life overweight, but lost 80 lbs about 8 years ago and have kept it off since that time. A little over a year ago I jumped back onto the weight-loss train and ditched an additional 15 pounds, was the smallest I have ever been and it was awesome!

Now to recent times, I have found that I have gained at 15 pounds since beginning my BC prescription  I am truly frustrated as I have continued to eat right, drink lots of water, and I exercise at least 5 days a week  I can think of no other explanation and if the prescription is the culprit I need to make a change. Any other ladies with this problem? I would appreciate any information or advice.

Thanks!!!

I have heard of this being an issue. I never gained while on Ortho, but I had trouble loosing it. My doc had a handy little book and actually looked it up. It said something about carbs were a big factor while on Ortho. Since I've cut my carbs back I've actually been losing well. Maybe try cutting back on carbs a little bit and see what happens?

I didn't take seasonique but I was on a different pill and gained a lot of weight. I now switched BC methods (Mirena now) and I'm on my way to losing. I just started and have lost about 4 pounds in 2 weeks with exercise and watching portion sizes.

Weight gain is a side affect of BC. I personally haven't had that problem but I did recently just start a new kind so I am hoping I still won't have the issue. I do know women who have had weight issues though. I would play with your eating and exercise habits and try to change things up a bit to see if that helps. If you haven't tried search the internet to see if it will give advice for eating habits with that med. The the other girl mentioned maybe it is just a change in what you eat like carbs.
  • I'm curious about this b/c I am about to go on some form of BC pills. I want to go on one of the ones where I only have 3-4 periods a year. Do those have a higher weight gain issue than the ones where you have a period every month? I have horribly painful periods, but I'll deal with that rather than gain more weight.

My experience with LoSeasonique has been great, other than the weight gain! I used to have severe nausea inducing pain nearly every month, but pain has been fairly non-existent since beginning with this pill and 3 to 4 times a year rather than 12 is pretty awesome too. To be completely fair to the drug, my physician did say that weight gain is not usually associated with this prescription, but can happen. I am currently awaiting a call from her to fully understand the chance that perhaps the pill is the reason for my gain.

To be proactive I have also decided this week to take a swing at a diet more concentrated on whole foods, veggies and fruits, with NO processed foods. I am also giving up the beer I do so love to partake in on the weekends. Hopefully this will help kickstart my weight loss once again.

    Onward and downward (hopefully)!

The start of all my weight gain happened when I began birth control pills - Ortho for me. It was a steady increase for 3 years until I got off it to get pg...then just added to the weight from there!
  • I took several different kinds of BC before I developed my blood clots and had to stop. But I did gain weight with it. It was slow and I only got up to 123lbs (starting out around ohh.. 115 I would guess). I was on it for 4 years though, starting with the depo shot then switching to a few different kinds of pills, figuring out which ones didn't give me migraines.
