Really helpful FREE mobile Apps! Do you know of any others?

I hope this doesn't violate the advertising policy....I didn't have anything to do with creating these apps and I definitely don't get anything for talking about them, but they look like a couple of awesome things to use alongside the MFP app to help keep track of everything involving diet and exercise. You can find both of these by searching your phone's app store or by googling them.

I also don't think either of these come from sites that compete with MFP...and from what I can tell they go together REALLY well. The first is the Endomondo app. It lets you use your phone's gps to keep track of your workouts, and even lets you map out a route online (using Google maps) that you can download to your phone, if there aren't already any routes saved by other people close to where you live. It helps you keep track of distance, time, etc, whether you're walking, running, biking, wind surfing, whatever! You can also compete with a friend on a particular route and keep track of one another's times. The free app has tons of stuff, the pro has a few extras, but not really anything I'd need. Just the fact that it lets me map out my route ahead of time and lets me know the distance and calories burned is awesome! I just found this, and I've already got a ton of cardio in today so I haven't tried it yet to see how well everything works, but it's got great reviews in the market. I have mapped out a couple of courses in town and downloaded them to my phone to try later though.

The other free app I found is Instant Heart Rate. It uses your phones camera lens to take an accurate heart rate. This is way easier than keeping track of your pulse the old fashioned way. I've tried it against the finger-in-the-neck method, and against the heart monitor on my exercise bike and it's incredibly accurate. From what I can tell, the only difference between the free and pro versions is that the pro version lets you save a history so you can keep track of your heart rate over time. But for on the spot checking, the free version works awesome.

If you know of any others to share please do, but to be honest, with these two plus the MFP app, I really can't think of anything else a person could need.

(Also my phone is an android, so I'm not sure if they are available for all others, but I'm sure they make something similar for iphone/blackberry.)

    I enjoy IMapMyFitness and RunKeeper.

I also use the Instant Heart Rate app. I doubt it is 100% accurate, but it gives me a very close idea of how quickly my heart can recover after a work out.

I LOVE the pushup app by Rittr Labs....

Trains you to be able to supposedly do 125 continuous pushups....Didn't quite work for me but i did significantly improve from 45 pushups straight to 77 straight...

What the program DID do successfully for me was put me on a pushup routine, which I follow strictly three times a week.

When I started the program I struggled to complete 160 WITHOUT a backpack, and last night I completed 420 pushups with a 20lb backpack (in 25 minutes)

I am currently at 420 pushups with a 20lb backpack. When I started the program I struggled to complete 160....

Spark Recipes and Whole Foods. Both contain nutritional info per recipe.

I also just downloaded NTC (Nike Training Club) it's free and I haven't really put it to use yet but it looks promising. Various workouts with pics and video.

I use a free app (Android) called Simple Weight Recorder. I weigh daily and log it in the app and it gives me my +/- weight change since I started using the app, my BMI number, charts history of weight loss, etc.

Now that's funny right there....I don't care who ya are!
  • Jenism, Do they let you build your own recipes and then calculate the nutrition info for you? If so, that's top notch!

Bump! Getting a new phone in a couple weeks that I can finally have apps for, and definitely want some good and useful ones!
  • Oly, these are definitely handy...one in particular that isn't strictly fitness related is convertpad it lets you convert from just about any unit of measurement (including a BUNCH I had never heard of) to something a lot more recognizable. Comes in handy with both cooking, body measurements, and distance.

I'm really loving Jefit for logging weightlifting. Sometimes I use my My Tracks for bike rides or skiing, but not always.

Another runkeeper user here. If anyone wants to friend me on there it's my username here. I also use C25K (forget which one since there are so many), and Full Fitness to track my workouts.

IDK if there is an app for sparkpeople, but sparkpeople online does let you build your own recipes and calculate calories.

I also downloaded NTC recently and like it. Just your itouch/iphone should be plugged into speakers not on you.

For walking/running, I really like AccuPedo. To keep track of water intake, I like TrackerSavy.

I build my recipes and figure the nutrition value right here on FMP. Just go the food section then I believe the recipe button is to the right of the bar. It's come in very handy! :)
