I've been overweight my ENTIRE life. I've joined this thing to break the cycle. My goal before going to Germany is to lose 50 lbs in 3 months. I have such a busy life, but I will make this work.

That's 4lbs a week... which unless you're over 400lbs might be a bit harsh on you as that would require a 2000 calorie/day deficit...

The question is: do you want to lose weight sustainably and keep it off long term or do you want to risk sliding into a yo-yo spiral?

Aim for a loss of 1% of your body weight per week. Your body will thank you long term.

You want to break the cycle? Aim for a reasonable weight loss goal that matches your stats, usually 1% loss of your bodyweight per week.

The trip to Germany sounds awesome. I went 5 years ago and loved it. Where specifically are you going?

In my humble opinion, a strong reason to lose weight by a certain date (like a wedding or a trip) can be great for the shortterm and not so great for the longterm. If this is a battle you've had your whole life you might want to consider stacking the odds of staying slim in your favour and go the slow and steady route.

Whatever you choose to do I wish you success in your weight loss goals and have a wonderful trip!

I' will be the 4th person to post a recommendation to make a sustainable longer term expectation and reasonable goal.. This average amount of weight loss is not very reasonable. And as everyone stated the 1% per week per body weight.

Break the cycle by logging correctly everything you eat and drink. By correctly I mean weigh your food and avoid using entries like homemade and generic. Have a reasonable caloric deficit (aim for 0.5-1 pound per week). Your goal of 50# in 3 months is probably not going to happen (sorry to be blunt), but weight loss is weight loss so if you are losing you are winning :) Don't set a time limit on your goals because weight loss isn't linear. Listen to the people on here who have been doing this for years. We know what we are talking about.

And I'll be next in line to say so.
Unfortunately shows like the Biggest Loser give the impression that big weekly losses like that are doable and the norm, but in reality this is not the case. The 50 lb weight loss goal is a good one (depending on your current weight)..stick with that, but I would drop the deadline. Even if you lose 20 pounds by then, you'll be well on your way!

50 pounds in three months is a very aggressive goal. A healthy weight loss is 0-2 pounds per week though you are likely to experience a whooooooosh in the first few weeks. I'd say, focus less on the number you want to lose. It's good to have a goal but a deadline isn't a positive move, in my opinion. You can do this! You can reach your desired weight - but remember, you're human, not a robot. Go easy on yourself, track what you eat, move more if you can - and you'll be feeling great in no time :)

Here is a great guideline for setting weekly weight loss goals:
If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal, and
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal.

3 months is about 12 weeks. Even if you have 75+ lbs to lose, 24 lbs is really the most you should target for that time period. If you lose extra weight, see it as a bonus, but target something realistic. You will most likely lost 5-10 lbs of water weight the first week or two.
