Will Jumping Jacks help me lose weight?

Hello ... Well, I've made a commitment lose 11 pounds by Xmas. I am partnering with a gal pal that wants to lose 20 pounds by the holidays. My weight loss plan is to eat healthy, exercise more, and track my progress in Myfitnesspal. My down fall is beer. I like beer. I like it alot! And I live in a small town with very limited social options. The end result is that most of my socialization involves beer. So, as a way of reminding myself (and my friends) of the significant calories in beer, I have also made a commitment to do 3 jumping jacks before I drink a beer. I've challenged my gal pal partner to do the same -- she also likes beer. We'll see how this works. It should be fun, at the very least.

3 jumping jacks before every beer? I love beer too but I also count my calorie intake. To lose weight you need to be in a deficit.3

What is the purpose of the jumping jacks? I'm not sure 3 jumping jacks would be much of a deterrent. And I doubt 3 would counter balance the calories in beer. Maybe if you did, say, 10 minutes of jumping jacks before every beer you could accomplish both of those things.0

MFP estimates 5 minutes of jumping jacks = 50 calories burned (and calorie burns here are often generous).
just log your beer, and anything you eat or drink.1 -
That's an interesting drinking game. It might work, and it might not. As queenliz99 said a deficit is the only way. I track calories in and out to calculate my deficit most of the time, but I'm lucky that my hunger signals are pretty accurate too. If I go to bed a bit peckish I know I've got a small deficit. Good luck.0

3 jumping jacks is a joke before having a beer. Not going to work. You'll probably end up drinking more.2

8 oz of SUPER LIGHT BEER is about 104-150 calories. Jumping jacks burn 1-2 calories per... so you need to do 150 jumping jacks (at minimum) to counter-act a single light beer. But this has nothing to do with creating a deficit to lose weight, only making sure your beer doesn't increase your weight.0

I am not expecting the jumping jacks to do anything as far as buring calories or offsetting calories. It's just a reminder -- something to make me think -- during social activity. I chose Jumping Jacks because they are obnoxious and I hate them, and doing them in public is somewhat embarrassing. I'd do more, even though I hate them, but I have some breathing issues so cardio is very difficult for me -- 3 jumping jacks is a major accomplishment. In addition to the jumping jacks thing, I have joined a fitness center (started today) and I am watching my calorie intake.2
