Why are some serving sizes so off?

Going to eat some split peas and the package says a serving size is 1/4 cup (35g) dry. So I measure out 1/4 cup and weigh it and it's 51g. So which serving do I go by? The 1/4 cup or the 35g?

    35g.

Cups are not good measuring tools unless it's for liquid. Actually, you're *supposed* to leave 1/8 inch unfilled in the cup, NOT level it off at the top of the cup.

You always go by the weight, the 1/4 is just a suggestion.

No problem. Only measure your liquids, always weigh your dry goods.
