while at the gym i go on the elliptical machine (i call it ski machine) and i work really hard for 20 min and burn 160 calories. however when i look on some peoples board i see them do 40 min and burn 700 cal...... how is this possible????

    Perhaps they go faster???
Or mayhaps they are being untruthful about the calorie burn.

Everyone burns cals differently, though this 700 cals in 40 min sounds off.

Resistance levels is what increases my calorie burn on them also speed at which I am going.

Yup I agree the speed and resistance level can be the reason.

It depends on weight, height, age, also the speed at which they are going and the resistance they are performing. Also, there are a number of different activities to do on the Elliptical and each one burns calories differently.

Matters on your heart rate and what not. If I go on the elliptical for 30 minutes and go fast. speed or 8.5 or what ever it is. With my heart rate monitor it tells me i burn 600ish calories. the tracker on the machine it self is wrong. it all matters on your resting heart rate. Your weight and How high you get your heart rate up to

Same on the treadmill, increasing the incline at a set speed allows me to burn as many calories as going at a much faster pace on a level setting.

Heavier people burn more in a given time too.... which is burning me now that I'm down 30 some pounds.

Resistance, speed, weight, and a hrm. I tend to burn more on the elliptical than the treadmill, but when I really think about it I sweat a whole lot more and work harder on the elliptical vs. the treadmill.

Probably the resistance, I don't seem to burn much on the elliptical because I find it too hard working at higher resistances. I generally burn around 130 for a 15 minute session
  • I can burn 1050 in an hour on there. Weight makes a huge difference!

Make sure when you are using the elliptical you type in your height and weight - it calculates more accurately that way. Also, if you are working out on a level one you are not going to burn that may calories. Resistence level and speed is what makes you burn higher cals. If you are still in doubt - invest in a HRM - this will give you the most accurate reading.

At my gym, the Precor Elliptical tells me I burn about 700 for about 40 minutes.

For more reference, try plugging numbers into this: http://www.self.com/calculatorsprograms/calculators/caloriesburned/elliptical_trainer .

    Cheers.
  • My husband weighs ALLOT more than I do and he burns more calories when we do the same exact workout. I am pretty sure the more you weigh the more calories you burn.

i have done the elliptical for an hour going as hard as I could with the resistance and incline pretty high and even at that I never get over 400 calories. thats according to the machine but a HRM might say something different.
if you were going by what the machine says I wouldn't because everyone burns calories differently
