Finding Losing Weight in my 50's almost impossible.

Hello: I a new to My Fitness Pal. I am looking for other women around my age that are having the same struggles with their weight as I am having. We can create a strong, understanding, and encouraging support system to help each other on our weight loss journey.

I'm in my 60's and lost 75 lbs last year while being post-menopausal and having hypothyroidism to boot. So know that it can be done. It may take a bit more effort than in your thirties, but your age is only a barrier if you let it. :)

I'm in my 40's and found that weight training was key, along with diet. Good news though...I hear when we are 80, our appetites diminish. I personally didn't want to wait that long. ;-)

@CindyWBroker - have you had your thyroid function checked recently? What have you tried to do in order to lose weight so far?

I am 61. Have lost 28 lbs in a little over 6 months - with 9 to go. It's been slow and steady - but still possible. I wasn't overweight when I was younger, so I have no comparison as to if it is more difficult to lose as one gets older. However, I CAN say this journey hasn't been too bad. I just stick to my calorie allotment every day, alternate days of running and strength training with days of yoga. I actually feel more energetic, stronger, more optimistic than I have in years. My skin looks great and I feel awesome.... think this is possible for women of ANY age...

Yes, I have had my thyroid checked recently. Everything was good. I have tried to cut back on calories and work out each day. Not making excuses but my schedule is really tough. Always on the go and grabbing food. I am going to start preparing all my food for the day.

Hi Cindy - I hear you when it comes to losing and maintaining (which is even harder) when you start to get older. It's an ongoing awareness - I found that if I'm 10 lbs up or down -- the main focus is on healthy choices - eating a variety of food, and doing cross-training types of workouts to maintain lean muscle and avoid diseases cause by weight issues, and poor nutrition. I help others and myself in private groups to focus on this -Gonna actually have a Free Quick Healthy Meal private group challenge coming soon -would love to extend an invite to you. - Marietta /SassyNChicago

I'm 57 and have lost 45lbs. Watching those calories and exercise and watching my carbs has done it for me. It is work and it is being intentional about it.

I highly recommend you purchase a digital food scale, and spend at least the first week getting used to properly logging everything you normally eat in a day. This is honestly the only way you'll really get a handle on how many calories is your norm. From there it's much easier to figure out how best to make small incremental changes that you can stick with.

Here's a chart that addresses this as well as other issues relating to reasons why you may not be losing weight at this point. :

This. Consistency and stick with it no matter what. The fitness lifestyle and being mindful about the diet takes a lot of practice plus trial and error.

I am now 79 but 4 years ago I joined MFP and took about a year and a half to lose 55 pounds - regular and honest logging and exercise will do it! I have gained 5 back in the past 2 years but have maintained the weight loss for the first time ever in my lifetime. I am still logging daily and I firmly believe that is what has kept me at this weight! Good luck! If you need a friend I'd be glad to help motivate you.
