weak ankles...

After cardio, my ankles usually hurt the most the next day. Today, I was doing jumping jacks and my left ankle completely went out, I fell and I got a really sharp pain in it. The pain went away after about a minute. Does anyone know why or have any ideas how to strengthen them?

Excercise Skool on demand (try you tube) has a foot and ankle workout from a physical therapist that is good. I also just got a walking workout from Jessica Smith because it had a foot and ankle workout on it (I have weak ankles as well), I haven't tried it yet but I really like the rest of the DVD.

    I also found this: http://www.runnersworld.com/training-video/feet-ankle-workouts

Misbehaving ankles are often caused by or worsened by wearing shoes with a raised heel, which about 90% of shoes have. The higher heel makes lateral stability more difficult, and it creates a clunkier walking gait, which adds stress to the ankle. Unless running, the best shoes have a "zero heel", like skateboard shoes or Keds, for example. The video linked above has good exercises, but don't wear the shoes she's wearing. :+1:

Also, make sure you have proper form and warm up properly. Neglecting either can lead to injury.

Squats will strengthen them. A good idea usvto do some mobility work with them also.

I found swimming with flippers to help too.
