    I'm a bit confused about one thing, though. I thought cups were a volumetric measure, like, you know, a cupful. So I'd expect the liquid and dry measures to be the same, i.e. fill up the same amount of space in a measuring jug etc.

    Well that one is easy... A cup of water and a cup of popcorn kernel take up the same volume, but they have have different weights.

    There are a few free iphone apps for conversions that are pretty handy also, if you need the info on the go. I think the one I have is called "Handy Converter". Hope this helps!
