if you are statisfed at 1200 caloires EAT 1200
if not then eat when your hungry
he told me my body will not be in starvation mode by eating 1200 calories

then my friends dr i had a convo with her
she said 1200 is way to low
and that yes i may lose weight but my body is in starvatuon mode
and by eating 1200 calories and working out im trying to be an anarexic
she asked if i was hungry alot and i told her no im hungry at my normal times but other than that i find it hard to eat all 1200 and she told me that im lost my bodys ability to tell me when its hungry and im starving my self and thats horrible that im not hungry and only eating 1200

Well, I think you should listen to your own body. You can take advice and all the info gathered and THEN you still have to listen to your body.

Are you losing weight at 1200 cals and burning 600 cals in exercise?
Do you feel like a b1tch every day when you do this?
Are you hungry all the time?
Do you binge because your body is begging for more?

If the answer is no, then keep on keeping on.

For me I had all of the above when I ate 1200 and burned 400 a day. Now I am eating 1300 and every exercise calorie I can get my hand on, and I am losing a steady 1-2 pounds a week.

    Oh-and I FEEL great!

    Good luck hon!

I listen to what my body tells me. I don't think my body knows numbers. Some days I eat a little over 1,300 some days below. I don't like my metabolism to get to settled with a certain amount of calories. My understanding is that your body burns 1,200 calories a day if you lay in bed all day without any activity. Bottom line for me, listen to your stomach & pay attention to your energy level!

yeah im eating 1200 and burning about 500calores 3-4days a week in the gym
outside of meals and snacks no im not hungry
i was at 193 for like 2 weeks and i was like grrrr!!!
then i knew my body needed a shock...
i had the worst dinner and dessert ever and went to the gym for 2 hours and BANG i dropped a pound
i dont feel that im starving myself... i feel satisfied
even after my dinner and dessert my first though was "ugh i have no desire to eat like this on a regular basis, you feel heavy and gross...yuck...glad i only have to do this to my self once in awhile"

im gunna keep doing what im doing
ill adjust my calories every so often but 1200 i think is safe and healthy for me

I eat when I am hungry. Sometimes I stop eating when I am not hungry anymore. Today I got soup and sandwich at Panera and ate my soufp, saved my sandwich for later. Hubby didn't act like he liked that idea (he only sees me eat little amounts, I don't think he has figured out how "often" I eat little amounts..I bet I eat as much as he does, lol). Go with what feels good.

Songbyrdsweet says that your body will stop feeling hungry several hours after you eat. That does not mean you don't need the extra calories.

The great Starvation Mode debate goes on. You will lose weight for a wile at a very low calorie consumption. But eventually you will stop losing weight, or worse, your body will begin to use tissues as energy.

Those of us here who have lost significant weight and are keeping it off are EATING the recommended calories here on myfitnesspal IN ADDITION to eating the extra calories "earned" by exercise."

Believe your body and stop when u feel like you are no longer hungry. Eat snacks 3 times a day and eat healthy. Go with that.

Also - I'd recommend you talk to a Nutritionist or a Dietitian. The "Doctor" can only know so much about all things... there's no way every doctor (especially Family Doctors or GP's) can know everything about everything people ask them. Sometimes, and I've had this experience, asking a doctor for weight loss advice can be like asking a plumber his advice on interior decorating. Not accurate or helpful. Maybe ask your doctor for a referral to a dietitian?

I think we have to be careful about the doctor's advice when it comes to diet and nutrition.

I know this sounds backwards, but it seems like doctors all have different perspectives and may not be following up to date information.

On other issues, the doctor is the way to go!

First off, no one really knows for CERTAIN. We know what studies say, and the problem with the studies is that everyone's bodies are different!

Just look at the sucessful people on here! Some ate all their exercise calories, some ate half of their exercise calories and some didn't eat any. Folks range from 1200 - 1800 calories a day and are still losing weight.

The only answer is YOUR answer. Experiement, see what works for you. I've been doing this two months now and I am still experiementing. :flowerforyou:

I agree with allenhm I've had to do the same thing. Now I'v learned to listen to my body also. If I think I'm hungry I drink a glass of water to see if that is it. If not I eat a healthy snack.

My Doc told me start at 1200 calories for 2 wks, then move to 1400 calories - total. He said when I plateau to hit the 1200 calories for another 2wks, then return to 1400, and not to eat back the exercise calories. This is to lose the weight.

Once I get to where I want it, I am to eat my calories and go to 1800 calories. To maintain.

So far it is working .

Medical doctors aren't the same thing as dieticians, just like chemists aren't the same as biologists. There is some overlapping information, and it's all medical, but one is a specialist and one may not have any more knowledge than one of us. When I went in to get my thyroid checked, my doctor remarked on how she ran and ran and just couldn't drop those last few pounds--the same problem everyone runs in to.

Your Dr. is probably not aware that MFP creates a BUILT IN DEFICIT. Once again-- a *built in deficit.* You are already eating 500 calories below maintenance. When you eat your exercise calories, you are still 500 calories below maintenance. You are not eating back everything you have burned for the day. So your Dr. is agreeing with the ADA that 1200 calories is an acceptable amount to eat without worrying about malnourishment, and that's okay. But telling you to burn 1200 calories a day and only eat 1200 calories a day is an oversimplification of how to lose weight. Yes, it's calories in vs. calories out, but within the limits of what your body will react to positively.

Songbyrdsweet hit the nail on the head, an MD is not a specialist by any stretch of the imagination. An MD may have different goals for you than you do, their goal maybe to maintain your health rather than improve it. An MD sees many patients during the day and his or her function is to maintain your health. When selecting an MD make quite sure that they understand what your goals are and quite frankly tell them that all you require is their partnership to reach your goals. My Lovely Bride and I recently went shopping for a new primary care doc, we moved cross country, and we interviewed several before we found one that was willing to work with us to improve our health as a partner rather than one that wanted to direct us to do this and that. A doc is just like anyone else you hire, like a lawyer or a CPA, they work for you, not the other way around.

Consult a dietician, they truly know about what goes into you body and what it does. They are or should be licensed and degreed. They are highly educated and have spent years working with dietary information. A "Nutritionist" is not a dietician, to my knowledge there is no formal education process for a nutritionist. Anyone can call themselves a nutritionist and not be outside of the law. An "Herbal Nutritionist" will have completely different ideas than a nutritionist that stresses a high carbohydrate nutrition program, you are dealing with someone that has a philosophy about what they think a diet should be. If you choose to go that way make sure that they have "Verifiable" credentials and really have proper training to advise you.

Okay look to the left see my pic that is me after 32 years of 1200-1500 calories diets with exercise and no added calories. That is what too much calorie restriction does to your body. When your body goes into starvation mode those survival genes will do ANYTHING to get you to eat and save you because it thinks you are dying. I got fatter with every calorie restricting diet that I was on until I was at 535 and finally had gastric bypass. But then my body the wonderful thing that it is learned to compensate for the calorie deficit the bypass created. Now I am here to tell you that I have seen the light. When I eat my calories I have on here and stick to the percentages set up I lose weight, when I go below that I gain(I was doing that for months before MFP and gained 30 lbs on about 1300 caloires). So I can tell you who my body thinks is right. I was even in a special inpatient research program in NIH in Bethesda MD with supposed specialists when I was 4, they took my calorie count down to 350 and I was exercising daily for at least an hour plus they kept us active with activities other than exercise. They were astonished that I gained that week so astonished they tried it for another week and I gained more. I think that doctors think calories in caloires out but never account for our bodies' abilities to survive and save themselves from starvation. That's why people who eat too few calories binge sometimes. The body has signaled the brain "Hey we're dying here make it eat so we can live!" Our ancient starvation signals don't know we're just trying to drop a few pounds it thinks we don't have enough food around to live on so it conserves and won't let anything go. Sorry I wrote a book but I am very passionate about this. Below my ticker is a link to some very informative posts that explain all the calories and much more if you haven't had a chance to read them. Heck print them and take them to your doctor! Good Luck!:flowerforyou:
