By binging.... been fighting the urge to binge for 3 days and today I finally gave in
Really annoys me that I can't control it and I have no idea how to stop it. I've been doing it all my adult life and I wish I could stop!

Are you restricting yourself too much? Telling yourself that certain things are off-limits?
I feel that once you get that out of your head, it is easier to stop the binges.
By making something taboo or off-limits, I feel that it makes you want to do anything to get your hands on that food and it can lead to destructive behaviour.4 -

What is going on in your life/head when you get the urge to binge? Maybe start a journal and see if there is a pattern.
What is normal eating and what is a binge to you?
Are you on a very restrictive diet (calorie or food types) when these episodes occur?
Do you try to manage your urge through other means (therapy, meditation, exercise, etc) or just try to ignore it?
Do you have a lot of negativity toward yourself or food?3 -
Binging is often the symptom of a poor diet rather than the cause of faliure. In your weight loss plan how much are you restricting your calories, could be that you are not giving yourself enough to feel satisfied and the result is occassional loss of control.5
-
Make some observations about the circumstances that surround the binge and the time leading up to it. Are you under an unusual amount of stress, is it TOM, things like that. Eventually, you're likely to notice a pattern. Once you do that, you can begin to see a binge coming. You can also begin to develop some coping techniques, hopefully some things that will diffuse the urge.2
-
You didn't ruin anything. You made one mistake. Beating yourself up about binging brings on more. Think about the when why and how. Take it apart.
Do you binge at night? Does real hunger trigger it? what do you binge on? Did your routine get disrupted?
After your dissection of the problem, see what you can change to help with each trigger. At first it might seem overwhelming, but never beat yourself up. Just fix what you can and keep on going. One day at a time.
If you keep pushing through, they will lose their ability to control you. They might never stop completely, but you csn still lose weight.
I have had and still have this issue on occasion.
But i've done pretty well with 116 gone.5 -
What are your calories?0

I think we all get to a point were we don't give a crap and eat eat eat ...get back on track next day and move forward is all you can do ... Quitting is not a option .. I find I'm weakest when I don't get enough rest ..
Good luck3 -
99% of the time MFP users who complain of bingeing are guilty of first restricting. They set their goal weight unrealistically low and their weight loss rate for 2 lbs a week and get assigned 1200 calories a day... then they try to eat even less that that for some reason and exercise a ton.
Well of course you end up bingeing- because first YOU STARVED YOURSELF. How do you expect your body to react? It releases an excessive amount of hunger hormones to force you to eat. It wants you to eat ALL OF THE CALORIES!!
It's trying to keep you from dying.
But guess what? It doesn't have to be like that!! You can set your goal weight to something achievable. You can set your rate of loss to 0.5 or 1 lb a week. You can eat more and still lose weight! AND NEVER feel the urge to binge!!!
What do you think is more effective for weight loss - starving for 1 to 3 days and then eating everything in your cupboard... Or setting your calories at a reasonable deficit, feeling fine, and being consistent for a few months?
Hmmm... that's a tough one...
And yet most people will pick starving and failing after a few days.
Maybe they just think they can will themselves through the hunger? Maybe they think they don't deserve to actually eat or feel good while dieting? Maybe they want an instant cure? Maybe they're just stupid?
I don't know. But I see posts like this all day long and I guarantee most are not bingeing from poor will power... it's because they starved themselves.9 -
Thanx guys.
I'm not restricting at all. I'm on 1750 cals and I eat most of my exercise calories too. I am ready to ovulate which does make me crave stuff. I just don't know how to stop it.
I had yesterday before work. 4 twirls and half a pack of nuts (the share bag) then got home and had full jar of Nutella, twirl bites and a takeaway.
I feel fine now n feel like it's outa my system and I can start again.
Just wish I could stop binging altogether xx0 -

Are you eating your feelings? A lot of people binge as a coping mechanism for other things?2 -

I liked your post, but... Speaking from a binger on the Eating Disorder side.
That doesn't work when you have access to money when the binge urge hits. It is extreeeeemely hard to resist it.
OP, I suggest if bingeing is an often occurrence, go talk to your doctor. Think about how to phrase how you feel during, too. Do you even feel hungry? Or just extreme urge to eat? Huge difference between the two. As a note, there actually are medical issues that cause this, too [I had one waaay before ED issue cropped up, unrelated to it].6 -
Well I try to surf the urge rather than going under. Next time you get the urge, tell yourself you need to ride it like a wave.3

I'll eat whatever is near, and all of it... xD; The urge hit me while I was out, but the binges can include anything and everything you even have at home. I ended up eating all my safe foods [medjool dates, fruit medley, etc]. If it is the second scenario that you brought it, it'll definitely be easier on her.
The hunger scale thing. That is super important. When it was a genuine health issue, I was actually FEELING hunger all the time. I felt like I was 'starving', was so hungry. Pretty much all the time. Turns out I had preeeeetty bad ulcers. xD; And I had only gone to the doc because I began throwing up blood.
OP, if you feel genuine hunger all the time, leading to the binges.. Def think about going to doctor.0 -

Forget all rules about eating and stop telling yourself you're on a diet. Just eat without putting pressure on yourself. Also experiment with other methods of eating. Bigger meals, different macro ratios, meal timing etc.0
-
I've had these issues previously aswell. What's worked for me is intermittent fasting. Timing my big meals around the end of the day just to have that full feeling while dieting.3

Dates are never a safe food in my case. Ate nearly 500 calories of them last week while being "controlled and reserved". Good thing I was pretty active that day so I could afford them and willingly chose to spend my calories on them. Can't imagine how many calories I'd plug in if I was actually binging on them.1 -

These are interesting questions. OP, do you have trigger foods that you would be tempted and want if you keep them in the cabinets of your home but don't if they are in the store? Or do you drive to the store or out of the house to get things? If it is the former, I agree with kommo, that is an easier problem to tackle.
For myself, I have certain foods I simply don't buy. I know what they are and keep them out of the house. Out of sight out of mind. I don't feel deprived when they aren't around, but rather I feel relieved.

Did you log the stuff you ate? How much over your calorie goal did you really go?
If you have one high day of calories and eat normally every other day then you don't ruin anything. If you binge eat every day for weeks it sets you back.
Maybe you just need a maintenance calorie day every now and then. Plan one out when you get the urge and see how it goes.1 -

Depends on the person. If it is helping me cut my bulimia, I'm hopping on the pesc/vegetarian train with wild abandon. xD;0 -
If this is happening at ovulation time, try to keep a track of your cycle and plan to eat at maintenance during that time. Fit the stuff into your day. You may slow your losses slightly (but women can lose slower than men because of menstrual cycle/hormonal things) but maybe the extra calories might help.1

It could be "seclusion" - eating foods in isolation.1 -

When I do the following, I don't have cravings:
1. Get sufficient sleep
2. Exercise regularly - when I get the happy hormones from exercise, I'm not prone to seeking them from food.
3. Get sufficient protein in relationship to carbs. I'm not low carb, but reducing carbs and upping protein worked for cravings for me. See also http://www.nutrition.org.uk/healthyliving/fuller/understanding-satiety-feeling-full-after-a-meal.html
4. Eat moderate amounts of fruit. This makes me less interested in higher calorie sweets.
5. Take a magnesium supplement. This can be especially helpful for women premenstrually.
6. Save foods like chocolate for after dinner, in small amounts
7. Stay hydrated
8. Have a calorie deficit that is appropriate for the amount of weight I need to lose. An overly aggressive goal can definitely lead to cravings.
9. Eat at maintenance when my appetite goes up premenstrually.
10. Exercise more at ovulation.
