Fresh start, hypothyroidism, looking for friends :)

Hello! I've been using mfp on and off for a few years and I'm hoping that this will be my last "fresh start."
I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a few months ago and I am finally on medication for it. I feel better, my blood tests are looking good, and for the first time ever I have lost five pounds without radical dieting and exercising, and I've kept it off!
I'm looking to really make a permanent change. I've steadily gained about 10 - 15 pounds a year for the last six years and just preventing myself from gaining more was a huge challenge. For a long time no one believed me when I said I couldn't lose weight or that I was gaining it back way too easily. It took me about 6 months of restrictive eating and going to gym every day to lose 15 pounds and 3 weeks of taking it down a notch to gain it back. This, combined with other symptoms, convinced my doctor to finally prescribe me synthroid.
I'm hoping to connect with some people who are in a similar situation, or have something in common with me (are you a student, do you have hypothyroidism, are you a really tall lady like me?) so we can share our challenges. Message me and we'll chat!

    Welcome aboard!

Sounds like you're on the path to success. I would reiterate not to do anything radical or drastic. Just make small changes, set small goals and when you meet these goals, set new ones. These changes will become habit and before you know it you will hit your long term goal.

I had a total thyroidectomy in 2000 and put on ~70lbs over 14 years due to not being aware of my caloric intake and no exercise. I bought into much of the stories about hypothyroidism and weight gain, until I read about an endocrinologist treating elite level athletes with hypothyroidism. I took this data, signed up with MFP and lost over 60 lbs in a year.

Hi. I have hypothyroidism as a side effect of taking a medication. By the numbers it is sub clinical but I was unable to lose weight and had significant hair loss. The hypothyroidism is managed with a low dose of thyroxine. Weight loss wise that has helped a little but I am still fighting the weight gain from the original medication.

Feel free to add me :)

Wow what a relief to find this post! I ended up being seen for something unrelated and they found out I had hypothyroidism. Terrible as it sounds I was just so used to feeling like garbage that I forgot how It could feel to be back to normal. I just got started on levothyroxine this weekend and I'm looking forward to first of all feeling better and second of all to loose some weight!!

I have tried weight watchers, MFP, atkins, low carb everything thinking and beating myself up despite my 100% adherence to whatever diet I was on... I exercised at the gym, zumba, bodymedia on demand.... everything! I lost 15 lbs over the course of 6 months and even though I am at a restricted caloric intake I have gained 7lbs back. I'm hoping that once my meds kick in I will be able to loose weight the same way I could before!
