Hello, I am a 54 yo male, have lost 90lbs in the past year just by changing my diet... I have added walking to my diet and now, I have not experienced any weight loss and actually gained a couple of lbs..in my youth I was physically fit, so in just a short time I am walking anywhere from 3 miles a day to 6.5 miles a day on weekends...my diet is the same, I actually stay below 1800 cal per day, fast 2 days a week..5/2...any ideas? I want to lose about 50 more lbs... thank you

Are you logging your food by weight

    Are you sufficiently hydrated

How long ago did you add walking as exercise? If less than 6 weeks and you know your logging is on track, then hold firm – water weight fluctuation is common with change in exercise.

Yes, probably just water weight increasing due to new exercise, give it time.

Are you logging this walking and eating back the calories? If so then whatever you are using to estimate calories is over estimating and you're eating back too much.

Especially with walking I notice the myfitnesspal calories burned estimates are extremely high. Like it says I burn more calories for an hour of walking than for an hour of weight lifting! I guarantee that is incorrect.

Personally I don't log exercise at all, just set my daily calorie goal appropriately for my activity.

You might try to add some short runs into the mix. Also try a app that syncs to MFP and use it to track your walking calories. I use Runtastic for running and planned long walks. I use FitBit for general activity tracking.

Think about it this way, you lost 90 pounds with no tools, just changing your diet, not matter what that entails, at the end of the day and week you were in a calorie deficit to lose weight..

So apply that here in terms of "calories" and "numbers".. MFP and a food scale are tools to help you with that.. but its still about being in a calorie deficit no matter the method.

With all that said, the walking has been increased from 3 to 6.5 as you described in a short period of time. This considered as increasing volume (and perhaps some intensity) therefore your body does need to recover a bit differently. and consider day to day fluctuations that might occur and plus the added exercise hense a small gain on the scale, but this is not fat, this would be considered normal..

Since you say nothing has changed with diet (food consumption the same, staying hydrated, no eating more or less carbs and sodium than normal, getting adequate sleep, etc.. etc..), and you are are 100% on point, its just a normal blip, so keep going.

first, thanks to all for taking time to reply..i use.. map my walk... synced with MFP..certainly not eating back the calories, I agree it could be swelling and water...at my age and weight..like most, I am probably under hydrated..am sore in areas (swelling?)..as stated I am now walking 4 mi on weekday and 6.5 on sat and sun..body may be a little confused..will give it time , see what happens! thanks again to all!
