Low Cal Bagel and Cream Cheese - BEWARE!

Ok, so I am a bagel and cream cheese addict. Give me a nice big bagel, and top it off with a whole package of cream cheese. Nothing better in the world for me. So, being on this 1500 calorie diet has put a halt to that. I thought I found a goldmine when I discovered Walmart had Great Value brand cream cheese that is fat free and only has 30 calories per serving, versus 100 calories per serving in regular cream cheese. Jackpot! NOT REALLY. The stuff is nothing like cream cheese. It is like watery and slippery, not at all creamy. And the taste is horrible. Ick.

With the cream cheese, I found Western Bagel brand "Alternative" bagels for only 110 calories. I got the blueberry kind. Can I just say, never friggin buy these things. They taste horrible, mostly because they taste SALTY. I don;t know why they taste salty, but they are so gross.

My advice, go with Thomas's Slim Bagels (110 calories) and Neufantel (sp?) Cheese (60 calories). They are MUCH better.

I use laughing cow cheese as a good sub for cream cheese or neufchatel. Portion controlled and only about 35 calories for 1 wedge which is sufficient for a bagel.

I don't eat bagels anymore...they are bad bad bad...but I heard that you can scoop the inside of the beagels and save a bunch of calories.

I love Thomas' bagel thins better than I like the regular size bagels. Too much dough for me.

    I love Philly's low-fat cream cheeses.

Cream cheese is one thing I can not do low calorie on. I just try to use a little less of the normal kind.

I am a bread fiend, so the bigger and doughy-er the better for me. I can deal with the thins, as long as i get my bagel and cream cheese. I don't want to totally restrict myself. I'd rather eat the things I like but in better portions.

I like thin bagels too. The other thing that might be more satisfying if you can do it....just have 1/2 of your favorite bagel and philadelphia low fat cream cheese. It will save you calories and money.

Does anyone know how many calories you save by scooping out the inside of the bagel?!?

I still have a bagel for breakfast pretty regularly, but I also try to eat the bulk of my calories in my breakfast. I rarely have cream cheese on it though. It's one of those things I've willingly sacrificed. As someone else suggested, the laughing cow cheese wedges are good, or I use the parkay butter spray stuff. It's all the taste of a buttery bagel without the butter.

This is a wonderful statement. Portion control and eating what you enjoy is much more feasible than cutting things out. All the low fat, low this, low that is gimmicky anyways. Eat what you like, watch your calories and portions.

.I like the Pepperidge Farm bagel thins.... only 100 calories and a little lower sodium than Thomas's. I use Weight Watchers whipped cream cheese... 60 calories for 2 tablespoons but had the lowest sodium of all of them.
