Help with getting rid of love handles

I'm a 22 year old male, just over 11 stone (156 pounds) and 5'11 tall. I have a BMI of 22 so well within the normal range and my arms and legs are quite skinny.

But for as long as I can remember, I've had these unsightly protruding love handles which stick out of my midsection. They are situated towards the back but appear to be on the sides when looking at my body from the front.

I've tried losing weight. I went from 15 stone (210 pounds) to the 11 stones that I am now. I'm also on a caloric deficit and do cardio and use the weight machines at the gym. But I still have the love handles! I guess I'm now what they call skinny fat? Do I just have wide hips/shoulders? I feel like I won't be able to get rid of them and surgery is my only option unless anyone can give me some advice on what else I should do? I hate my body because of them, can anyone help?

I think you might want to gain muscle slowly, then lose the fat slowly again. Change your body fat percent :)

I have the exact same kind of thing. The only solution that I have found is the long and slow process of building muscle while continuing to shave bodyfat. Either via recomp or bulk/cut. Welcome to the skinnyfat club my friend.
Hard work and time are what it takes.

Lift weights, gain muscle and then get lean.

You have to get your body fat % down. I had a beer gut 37 years in the making and it was only when I got below 15% body fat that it disappeared. I did lots of cardio (running 30 miles a week), resistance (Nautilus) and planks 15 minutes daily. I was able to lose 53 pounds this way. The bad news is that going to 21% BF and adding 10 - 15 pounds the handles are back.

Definitely. I've been doing the slow recomp for a couple of years. I definitely look better and while now at a higher weight fit into the same clothes I was wearing when I weighed 10 pounds less.
