So my husband, who is smaller than a toothpick, decided WE should start P90X. I am on board, i definately need to tone, and loose some weight.
First day : HOLY HANNAH. I can't even do a real push up people. Seriously. I am totally embarrased. BUT while my husband is over there doing real push ups - I am doing the girly push ups on my knees. Does that count? I made it through most of the program, even though I couldn't do hardly 10 reps on most of them.
Question is, for the women on here. Do you like P90X? What are your stories, sucesses, frustrations, etc? I am trying to monitor what I eat, but I refuse to give up any food. I just want to watch portion control and what goes in my body now. I hate diets and just want to eat better. Any tips for getting through this? I know this is just the first day, but I am really wanting to make it through this. :)
Let's just say we were both yelling at the screen by the end of the hour. I did ok for not being in shape, and being a girl. LOL.

  • Knees do count! And hang in there! You will grow to love it! First week is the hardest.

    I'm a guy ... and can't make it through 30 Day Shred (30DS) day 1 ... P90X is a fantasy. Good luck.

Just stick with it. I have done 4 weeks and it gets a little easier each week. I also just watch what I eat, I can't do their meal plan. The only thing I have a problem with is getting time to do the videos every day.
  • I yell at the screen too sometimes when I do the workouts.. I'm on week 3-just started it-and i'm getting stronger and better at pushups. The best thing to do is stick with it. Do the modifications (pushups on your knees)..that's why they usually have at least one of the people showing you the easier way...because not everyone is able to do it the hard way at first. It's going to be super hard at first... but if you keep doing it everyday, i promise you'll get better and better at it!

LOL! I am in my last week of p90x and I could NOT do a regular pushup either when I started. Now I think I can do 12-14. You'll be surprised how fast you get stronger! Still can't do a pullup without the chair :( You'll def be sore this week but week 2 will be better.

    Thanks!!
Dumb question, but is it ok if I can't do a pull up? I am using the bands instead.

This is my second round of P90X, and I still struggle with full body pushups. Just continue to do them on your knees until you get stronger. I can do about 10 maybe, but I have to have my feet really wide to do them. Pushups are going to be difficult. As women we don’t have the muscle mass that men do, so it’s going to take a while to build up strength to do the full pushups. You have to be patient with P90X, nothing is going to happen overnight, and it’s a gradual process. I lost 30 lbs the first round, I got stronger and my balance got better. I decided to do it again and use heavier weights. That’s the only way our bodies will change if we continue to challenge it with resistance. With P90X don’t think about refusing to give up food, but look at it as a way of fueling your body better so you can see the changes and weight loss and muscle tone. Nutrition is 80% of your results in P90X. If you don’t change the way you think about nutrition and food, you’ll get stronger but you won’t see changes. P90X is not about a diet, it’s about nutrition. There’s no cutting back calories or going on stupid fasts. It’s about putting the right nutrients in your body so you can sustain lean muscle and get rid of fat.

LOL!! Being a girl is NO excuse! :o) I have done P90X (and still do some videos) in the past and yes, it was challenging. I'm pretty athletic to begin with so I didn't have too much difficulty. Yes, bent knee push ups do count, but try your hardest to at least get one or two in if you can muster it. You'll get stronger the more you do it. I can do 20 pushups and even the one-armed pushups (about 5 of those) It's core exercise and great for the abs! Now, pull ups are a different story. Even after completing the program I struggled to get very many unassisted pull ups done. No matter, though. I got the toning I was looking for without them.

I found that some workouts were easier than others and my husband found different ones easier for him. I think it's just whatever our bodies are geared for.

The first time we did the program, we followed the nutrition plan and it worked well, however I found that it was unsustainable for me. The next time we did it and just watched what we ate and it worked just fine. You don't have to give anything up, but you will need proper nutrition - you're building muscle and you'll poop out and spin your wheels if you don't get enough protein.

All-in-all I love the program. Right now I am training for half marathons so I really don't have the time for P90X. In the winter months I'll probably take it up again.

I did P90 2 years ago with my husband (well then fiance) and I made 60 days (then went on vacation) and in that 60 days I lost 12lbs and I was starting to really like my stomach. I just started it again Sunday but so far have only worked out once. I dont know if I'll follow the whole program this time or just kind of do what I feel like doing. Make sure you drink TONS of water while your doing P90 and you eat the right amount of protein to keep rebuilding your muscles. Make sure you eat enough everyday or you may experience rabdo which is very painful. And yes knee push ups count! They better or I'm in trouble lol! Keep up the good work!

That is good news for sure. Good to know I am not a total loser if I can't do a pull up. Hehehehe.
Thanks for all the help! I guess I should have said I am watching what I eat, drinking protein shakes, eating fruits and veggies and trying. I just don't like knowing I can't have something, because then that would be all I want. Does that make sense?
Thank you all so much for the info and encouragement, it means a lot!

I'm in my 3rd week of P90x and I love it! About 4 months ago I couldn't do a push-up to save my life, but I started working at it, a little bit every day and now I can do about 25 full push-ups without a break and close to 75 with small set breaks. Seriously if you're willing to put a little work in you'll be doing full push ups in no time, you just need to build up your strength and stamina. Same with the pull-ups. A few weeks ago I could do 0 pull-ups, I went out and bought a pull up bar and started working at it. I finally got my first un-assisted pull up about 2 weeks ago and now I can do about 3 un-assisted. I'm still using the chair for the P90x pull-ups, no way I can do that many at a time and in a row.

But the important thing is to not be discouraged and to take progress one step at a time. Start a full body push up but don't go down as deep, if you do this for awhile it will help you to build up strength to go deeper until you're in a full one. And then from there keep practicing and the numbers will come.

    Good luck!

OK, that is encouraging for sure! We don't have the actual pull up bar on the door, but have the system that has the dips, leg lifts and pull up bar on the system. I am using the bands for now until I feel like I can at least try again with the bar. Trying is what counts right? I will get there... eventually.
Thanks again for the insight. It helps for sure! p.s. Awesome pic too!
