Recumbent bike

I'm planning on getting a recumbent bike. Will it give the same results as an upright bike? I need it for medical reasons so I won't hurt myself. Most machines are not safe for me.

Are you talking about a real recumbent bicycle or a stationary one?

It's all about the work out you do on the bike.

The kind with the chair seat are a lot more comfortable than the hard bike seats (and I would use more).

The recumbent will work your glutes more than your quads, but the cardio effect should be the same.

Agree you can get a good workout with a recumbent. I would think though you could ultimately get a better calorie burn with a standard bike since the riding position forces you to use core museles more.

I would also question the idea a recumbent works the butt more. You are sitting on the muscle

Being able to get your weight over the pedals plus engaging your core to a higher degree using a conventional riding position bike is a huge advantage over a recumbent.
But you can still get a good CV workout and if it's required for safety reasons then go for it.

I have back problems, and the recumbent bike is great if you have back issues. All of my exercise when I first started was on the recumbent bike while watching TV at night.

The machine isn't what gives you the results...the work you do on the machine does.

Recumbent bikes are faster (outdoors) because they have less air resistance, like torpedoes. They can't climb very well though because of the body position. They're often the bike of choice for men who use their beards as granola storage devices.
