Hi. My plan is to have protein drinks for breakfast and lunch, about 300 calories per drink. Then a few snacks like yogurt or nuts. For dinner have a normal balanced meal of about 800-1000 calories. Not to go over 2000 calories per day. I'm 305 and want to get to 180. Any thoughts or comments?

I think it is better to eat the least less for dinner and the most for breakfast. Just my own thoughts0

Protein drinks are meant to supplement protein. Meal replacement drinks are more nutritionally rounded.
Neither one sounds like much fun to me. I've lost weight by eating basically what I normally eat in smaller portions and/or with satisfying substitutions. My food scale is my best friend.3 -
my breakfast shake is a staple because not a morning eater. but one a day is enough for me. every so often i do use them as last-resort food because i don't feel like dealing with the real thing, and i always get really scratchy and sad within about two days of that.2

Calories in, calories out.
It's important when cutting calories to ensure you are getting proper nutrients. Many shakes have added vitamins and minerals.

I make a meal replacement drink for bfast since I'm not a bfast eater. I add almond milk spinach or kale, berries and s scoop of protein powder. Find it's great right before my workout. You need to find what works for you. I have a 100 lbs to lose so we can do this!1

Calorie deficiencies cause weight loss. If a protein shake fits then drink it. Given your current plan you should lose weight, but just make sure you are logging everything correctly and weighing everything you eat. Good luck!0

I use protein powder mixed with coconut water for a post workout drink for muscle recovery and natural electrolytes, or as a snack or to get in more protein if I'm falling short of my 100 grams of protein a day goal.
Do what works best for you, as long as you hit your calorie goal that myfitnesspal gave you (or you found with some other calories or macros calculator) then you will lose weight. You did get that 2000 calories goal from somewhere based on your stats right? It's not just an arbitrary number??
Personally I could never eat a meal that was 800-1000 calories though. My biggest meals are around 400 calories. But that's all just personal preference- if you enjoy one big meal a day then go for it.0 -
Yoi need to take vitmens anf make sure your getting at least 70g of protein a day0

That doesn't seem particularly satisfying or like a balanced diet to me, but if you enjoy it it could work for weight loss.
What do you see as the benefit of a protein shake vs. a regular lunch and breakfast, though?
Snacks and dinner size, totally up to you, doesn't matter, overall calories matter.0 -

Protein drinks are protein supplements, not meal replacements....I would think you would substantially be lacking in essential vitamins and minerals...not to mention, I'd be starving...protein shakes are going to go right through you and I know very few people who actually find them satiating.0 -
Did a medical supervised protein shake diet in the early 90's. You can lose a lot of weight quickly, but it takes a toll. I lost 285lbs in 9 months, but I lost my gall bladder and slowed down my metabolism. If you use it, I suggest you use it to supplement maybe one meal or part of one meal. The protein fast I was on was 500 or 600 calories a day. You can still buy the HMR shakes, but after you lose your weight you have to go back to eating real food. If you can make the changes to your your daily diet, and lose the desired weight you will be better prepared to keep it off.2

I favor real food over protien shakes for many reasons, one being a person being able to sustain the weight loss over long term.
OP, I'm curious on your stats. What is your current weight, weekly weight loss goal, and average weight loss at your current 2000 caloric intake?0 -
I like protein shakes in the morning and post workout. Protein is complex and takes longer for your body to break down so I find it keeps me full longer. I usually have at least one a day. I get protein powder that has 20g of protein and ~110calories so then I can add powdered peanut butter or other tasty things and keep it reasonable. They recommend that protein goals should be your weight(lbs) x 0.8 and that is how many grams a day you need. If you aren't reaching this with food then shakes are great to help that. Remember your body can only metabolize ~20g protein for every 2hrs so small bits of protein here and there is better than a large quantity all at once. Don't want your body to waste it since it isn't the cheapest fuel source. Best wishes!0

I've lost 108lbs and protein drinks have been a daily thing for me. Because I figured out my hunger patterns early on, I do use protein shakes early in the day. This isn't a special thing, it works for MY hunger patterns, and those who have similar ones. It allows me to supplement when I'm not very hungry and then to indulge in a big dinner and snacks later. If this works for you, go for it. Some people need a real breakfast and lunch. I'm a never breakfast (unless it's for dinner) and occasional lunch type. Figure out how to do you.0
