Summer Grilling Fun, 270 Calorie Hamburgers.

Options
When I started to think about losing weight my friends told me I was "crazy to go on a diet during grilling season". I love BBQ, smoking and grilling and spend two or three days a week during the summer doing just that.

Not being one to give up, I simply adapted and came up with a delicious 270 (285 with BBQ sauce) grilled hamburger using basic ingredients. Even with side (chips and dip) the total meal came out to 455 calories and I left about a third on the plate.

4 oz hand formed beef patties, 95% lean ground beef.
Orowheat - 100% Whole Wheat Sandwich Thins, 1 roll
Lettuce - Iceberg (includes crisphead types), raw, 0.25 cup shredded
Tomatoes, Medium - Vegetables (2-3/5" Dia) (123g), 0.25 medium tomato
Heinz - Tomato Ketchup - 1 Tbsp, 1 Tbsp
Lightly salt and pepper

Must have a hot grill to keep the lean meat from sticking, cook until edges under hamburger are visibly browned before flipping (if you try to flip to early they will stick to the grill and break apart).

Flip and brush with BBQ Sauce if desired (I use 1 tbsp of KC Masterpiece thinned with 1 tbsp of water to thin and lightly brush on).

Assemble and eat...

Will be working on tacos next week. I found a corn shell that 's 50 calories... Thinking of using ground turkey to replace beef (or not).

Even lower calorie, you could make a turkey burger. Sounds gross but it's YUMMY. Add some green or white onions and some egg to hold it together, season with s&p.

I've been using Carl's Jr. Grilled Teriyaki Turkey burgers as my "when nothing else works" meal, very tasty and 470 calories.

Jennie O preshaped turkey burgers are the BEST, season them like it was beef patty and you can hardly tell the difference

This is gonna sound kinda gross, but it works.

When you are mixing the stuff into the hamburger meat, get into the bowl with both hands. Knead the stuff thoroughly. Let it 'squish' between your fingers. Just grab a fistful of the raw meat and squeeze it until it all oozes out of your hand. Get another fistful and do it again. Continue for about five minutes. Be sure it is completely mixed up. Then form the patties.

They might still have a tendency to fall apart if you flip them too soon, but the integrity of the patty is much better.

One other thing: Don't mash down on the patties while they are on the grill. You might squeeze out some of the grease, but you'll also increase the likelihood of the patty coming apart.
